HyAI 1.0 & 2.0
HyAI 2.0
Timescale:
12 months
Funders:
The project has received £494k funding from the Department of Business Energy and Industrial Strategy’s Energy Entrepreneur Fund
Project overview:
The HyAI 2.0 project aims to trial the use of an artificial intelligence (AI) platform called HyAI by integrating the system into EMEC’s hydrogen plant on the island of Eday, Orkney.
HyAI is an AI-powered hydrogen management platform developed by project lead H2GO Power. The cloud-based software uses machine learning and optimisation algorithms to make intelligent, data-driven decisions to ensure system safety and reliability, and identify the most cost-effective times for hydrogen generation and storage.
The project will trial the software in two phases. The first phase involves running proof-of-value simulations with the AI software using data from commercial use cases provided by project partners EMEC and National Grid Gas Transmission.
The second phase will see the platform integrated into EMEC’s hydrogen production plant on Eday and tested as a fully integrated pilot. The HyAI system aims to control hydrogen production in real time by combining historical and forecasted data on weather, renewable generation sources including wind and tidal, as well as hydrogen storage capacity and electricity prices. Multiple tests will be conducted to validate the efficacy of the HyAI software system, starting with system trials using advisory control ramping up to trials with semiautonomous control.

- National Grid Gas Transmission
EMEC’s role:
EMEC will supply plant data for the first phase of proof-of-value simulations. In phase two, EMEC will facilitate the real-time integration and demonstration of the AI platform at the site on Eday.

Project: HyAI (Hydrogen Artificial Intelligence)
Timescale: Oct 2020 – July 2021
Funders: Innovate UK and the Sustainable Innovation Fund
Project overview:
HyAI is a pilot demonstration of AI software-controlled hydrogen storage technology. HyAI will show how software integrated with hydrogen hardware can make intelligent, data-driven asset management decisions in real time and optimise renewable energy integration into the UK electricity grid.
Partners:
- H2GO Power (lead partner)
- EMEC
- Imperial College London
EMEC’s role:
The project will ultiise energy data supplied from EMEC’s hydrogen production site to de3velop and train the AI software model. The AI platform acts as an energy management system, integrating data about weather, electricity prices and grid management. It then translates this information using AI predictive algorithms to optimise the operation of the storage systems by predicting future power cost and user demands
