Nominated by Stuart Brown, CEO of 2015′s winner of the Marine Energy Innovation of the Year Award, FloWave, EMEC has been shortlisted for the ‘Marine Energy Technology of the Year’ at the Business Green Technology Awards 2016.
The awards aim to celebrate start-ups and established technology and engineering companies who are ‘turning the dream of a sustainable green economy into a reality’.
Attending the awards, representing EMEC will be Non-Executive Director, John Griffiths.
Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on 2 December 2016, in London.

EMEC is attending Wave Energy Scotland’s (WES) Inaugural Annual Conference on Friday 2nd December 2016. The event is taking place at South Halls, Pollock Halls, Holyrood Road, Edinburgh.
The one day conference is designed to inform delegates about the progress of the WES programme.

The €11m FORESEA programme will host a webinar regarding its second call for support package applications on 18 January from 15:30-16:30 CET.
FORESEA’s first call resulted in awards for 10 innovative ocean energy technologies. The second call for applications opened on 9 November and runs until 27 February.
The webinar will provide participants with feedback from the 1st call, information on the 2nd call, and an opportunity to put their questions to the FORESEA team.

About FORESEA
FORESEA is an €11m project which helps to bring offshore renewable energy technologies to market by providing free access through tailored support packages to a world-leading network of test centres: EMEC (UK), SEM-REV (France), SmartBay (Ireland) and Stichting Tidal Testing Centre (Netherlands).
Access is awarded through a series of competitive calls for application. It is financed by Interreg Europe.

Eileen Linklater, EMEC Client Relationship and Marketing Manager will be presenting at the Rushlight Show in Panel 3, 14:00 – 15:15pm on Wednesday 25th January 2017. The event will be held at the Royal College of Surgeons of England, London.
The Rushlight Show is designed to promote the development and deployment of clean technologies, innovation and sustainable solutions.
EMEC will have a stand at the conference under the ORCHIDS (Offshore Renewable energy Cable Health in Integrated Distributed Senor systems) project which looks at enhancing subsea cable monitoring capabilities.
Following the conference, EMEC will attend the Rushlight Awards where we are nominated for the Marine and Hydrogen Energy Award.

EMEC’s Metocean Data Manager, Joe Thompson, is speaking at Data Space 2017. The event is taking place in Glasgow, 1-2 February 2017.
With a focus on the exploration and exploitation of new data sets, Data Space 2017 will pull together data and service providers with end users from across many sectors and markets to identify the opportunities that exist for businesses today and provide a unique networking opportunity for all those interested in data.

The British Embassy (Beijing) would like to invite you to join the Marine Energy Mission to China between February 15th and 17th, 2017. The mission will visit Qingdao in Shandong Province and Zhoushan in Zhejiang province, two of the three key regions designated by China’s central government to test and harness China’s marine energy resources.
China is actively developing its approach to marine energy, making this a key juncture at which British companies and universities can make an impactful statement of intent as world leaders in the field.
The visit will provide you with the chance to meet key stakeholders in this emerging industry—including prominent State Owned Enterprises looking at investment, innovative private companies, leading research institutions, and key policy makers at the provincial and national level. Qingdao has also indicated specific interest in energy storage and control systems.
Through the visit:
- You will have a chance to present your organisation in front of key local audiences, including potential investors;
- You will be able to engage with and assess, at first hand, the emerging marine energy sector in China;
- You will learn about Qingdao and Zhoushan’s respective research and development of wave and tidal technologies and testing infrastructure;
- You will meet face-to-face, and speak separately with local businesses and researchers that you are interested in during match-making sessions.
There will be staff from the British Embassy on site to support you with translation, networking, and follow-up etc.

Costs:
There is no actual cost in joinng the mission but all travel and accommodation must be borne by participants themselves. In certain instances support towards such expense may be available from regional economic development
agencies, but this will be on a case-by-case basis.
Visas:
Visas are required for travel to China, which need to be processed through your nearest Chinese Visa Application Centre in the UK. CBBC can help navigate this process, which typically requires a minimum of 5 working days to

Neil Kermode, EMEC Managing Director, will be speaking on the pioneering advancements taking place in marine energy and the potential this new renewable energy resource offers the world at the Edinburgh Sustainable Innovation Conference (ESIC). Hosted by The Buchanan Institute, ESIC will be held on Monday 20th February 2017 at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh.
As the world’s leading marine energy test facility, EMEC has hosted 17 companies with 27 wave and tidal prototypes – more than anywhere else in the world. Some of EMEC’s alumni are now deploying the first arrays of these technologies in Scotland, France and Canada bringing marine energy even closer to becoming a commercial reality. Hot on their heels, many new technologies are making their way to test at EMEC during 2017/18 with the help of some innovative projects aimed at improving survivability and reliability in this burgeoning sector.

Have we forgotten about sustainability?
Surely the answer is “no, we have not”. Stories of climate change, pollution and fierce stances of environmental protection fill our email accounts, newsfeeds and discussions. Yet, at times, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and somewhat powerless in the current political and social climate. We forget how the repetitive reminders of sustainability crop up in our everyday lives; as we pile our plastic into recycling or pull on our cycling shorts instead of seat belts. These actions, amongst everything else, seem stagnant in a time where radical change and dedication towards socially and environmentally responsible practice is a must.
The Buchanan Institute see it as essential to be part of a sustainability movement that encourages innovative ideas and inspires participation. Therefore, we are excited to be welcoming all sustainability experts, enthusiasts and novices to our event: the Edinburgh Sustainable Innovation Conference (ESIC) on Monday 20th February 2016. Taking place at Dynamic Earth in Edinburgh, the conference will cover themes such as community energy, circular economy, district heating, consumer choice and the creation of accessible and collaborative policy.
We aim to redraft our misplaced and stagnated ideas of sustainability by showcasing innovative practice from Scotland and beyond. By changing the rhetoric, we aim to stimulate and build upon ideas and practices through collaboration between public, private and educational sectors. A day centered around inspiring lectures and workshops, led by industry professionals and social groups, will turn discussion into performance that we can all play a part in. ESIC is the platform where connections and cross sector engagement will bring sustainability to the forefront of our lives, in policy and practice, to enact real change.

Session B2: Maximising the Power: Grid, Systems and Storage Challenges and Solutions
Neil Kermode: ‘Hydrogen from tidal energy: overcoming grid constraints’
Orkney has an abundance of renewably produced electricity however the current grid is already constrained, restricting the progress of new wind, tidal and wave energy projects. Therefore, innovative projects are being developed to use Orkney’s energy in different ways. EMEC has invested in an electrolyser to convert tidal power to hydrogen. The ‘Surf ‘n’ Turf’ project will build on this to incorporate wind energy as well, using a fuel cell to convert it back to electricity to power local ferries. Another project – BIG HIT – will use renewably generated hydrogen to power a fleet of electric vans and two hydrogen-powered boilers.

About SR Annual Conference
2017 will see Scotland’s energy sector continuing its evolution. The next 12 months will herald a new Energy Strategy and stricter carbon reduction targets for Scotland, an industrial strategy and the publishing of a climate change plan at Westminster, and further clarity on the emerging shape of Britain’s likely exit from the EU. We should also see the next allocation round for Contracts for Difference, a reformed Renewable Heat Incentive and ongoing reductions to Feed-in Tariffs. These changes are happening against a backdrop of rapid cost reduction, and significant progress in the development of the technology deployed to generate, store and manage the use of heat and power.
Scottish Renewables’ Annual Conference 2017 will look at what these changes mean for the future development of Scotland’s renewable energy sector.
The event will examine the role our industry can play in delivering government ambitions to tackle climate change while keeping bills down for consumers, maintaining security of supply and to growing the economy. The conference will also ask what more government at every level can do to support and accelerate Scotland’s energy evolution.
Day One
With a new format for 2017, Day One of the conference will feature an afternoon of high-level presentations from national and international speakers on the key factors that will define the next chapter for Scotland’s energy evolution:

The day will conclude with a reception and networking buffet dinner in the conference venue.
Day Two
Day Two of the conference will delve deeper into the overarching themes explored on Day One to debate what Scotland’s energy evolution means for the growth of renewable heat, power and transport.
We will hear from key decision makers and senior industry players who are seizing opportunities to drive the low-carbon energy transition, and ask:
- How are governments at all levels planning to meet our ever-changing climate ambitions while making use of more devolved powers at UK, Scottish and local levels?
- What are renewables businesses doing now to adapt to and capitalise on the move to a more flexible, smart, integrated and decentralised energy system?
- And how can our industry secure viable routes to market and develop new business models to ensure the continued growth of renewable heat, power and transport in Scotland?
Speakers from across all areas of the industry will discuss these questions and more to inform the next stage of Scotland’s energy evolution.
