As part of the Energy Day programme of EU Sustainable Energy Week, a public open day took place on Tuesday 3rd June 2014 to showcase the pioneering advancements that are taking place in marine renewables in Orkney.
EMEC, in partnership with Ocean Energy Europe, developed an exciting programme of events throughout the day, including opening up the main marine renewables sites around Orkney to visitors.

Morning seminar

Featuring speakers from EMEC, technology developers, Scottish Development International, Ocean Energy Europe, and the European Commission the event will focus on how testing work in Orkney is conquering technical challenges and contributing to industry development, highlighting the pan-European successes and global potential of this exciting, innovative sector.

Due to the changing nature of test plans for wave and tidal devices, it is common for machines to move on and off site regularly. As such, the Pelamis P2 machine which was expected to be at Lyness for viewing, will now in fact be at sea at EMEC’s Billia Croo wave test site instead.
Please note that the planned session with Lyness Pier open to the public between 1400 and 1600 will therefore no longer take place.*

EMEC’s Managing Director Neil Kermode is speaking at the 1st International Symposium on Energy Challenges and Mechanics in Aberdeen in July 2014.
Neil will speak alongside EMEC’s non-executive Research Director Ian Bryden in session 15: Marine Energy which will showcase exciting developments in a rapidly developing marine energy sector. Technology developers are operating in one of the most challenging domains known to humanity and are drawing upon cutting edge research demonstrating a close partnership between academia and industry.

EMEC will be exhibiting at the Grand Renewable Energy (GRE) 2014 International Conference & Exhibition in Tokyo, Japan, on 27th July to 1st August. The GRE Conference is being held jointly with the 2nd Asian Wave and Tidal Energy Conference (AWTEC).

The annual marine renewables update at the Orkney International Science Festival will take place this Friday, 5th September, in the Orkney Arts Theatre, at 8.30pm.
The event – ‘Wave and tide: the year ahead’ – will provide an update on the work taking place at EMEC and throughout the marine renewables sector in Orkney. The programme will include talks on the following subjects:

EMEC is sponsoring the Inaugural Meeting of the IECRE Management Committee (REMC) taking place on 16-18th September 2014 in Boulder, Colorado.

The objective of the IECRE (IEC System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for Use in Renewable Energy Applications) System is to facilitate international trade in equipment and services for use in Renewable Energy Sectors while maintaining the required level of safety:
- Operate a single, global certification System.
- Consistent understanding of what a certificate means, which certificates exists and how they are related.
- The System must be effective (avoid double work, which information must be given when and to whom) and will include a mechanisms to solve disagreements between stakeholders both on the content of the System as well as its correct application.
- The System aims for a harmonized application around the globe to ensure a uniform implementation and mutual recognition between certification bodies and test labs.
- The System will make use of high quality international standards and will allow for continuous improvement of the System.
- The System aims for harmonized application around the globe to ensure a uniform implementation and delivery of information by suppliers, sub-suppliers, end users and others providing documentation for certification.
- The System aims for harmonized application around the globe to ensure a uniform implementation and clear understanding of all suppliers, sub-suppliers, end users and other applicants for the elements and modules as well as reports, statements and certificates of the certification processes.
- The System aims for acceptance by local/national authorities or other bodies requiring and benefiting from certification

Day 2:
- Max is chairing Plenary 4: Financing Innovation. Financing the development of wave and tidal technologies remains a key challenge for the sector. Has the time now come to radically overhaul the way the marine energy sector is funded?
- Neil is chairing Plenary 5B: Grid – The Missing Link?, exploring recent attempts to tackle grid issues, and asking whether we can ‘work smarter’ across Europe to resolve problems here in Scotland while heading off risks around the rest of the EU.

International Open-water Test Centres Workshop:
To build on EMEC’s Global Ocean Energy symposium held in 2013, we are hosting a workshop for international open-water test centres on 7th November 2014. The workshop aims to establish a global network of open-sea marine energy test centres, providing a forum to discuss key R&D topics and identify actions to forge relationships and knowledge transfer between test sites.
In order to ensure focused discussion, this event is by invitation only.

ICOE is the global venue for exchange of information and building relationships, in order to grow a world-wide marine renewable energy industry. ICOE was first established in 2006 and is now held every two years. It has grown to almost 1000 participants from almost 40 countries, had a significant tradeshow in 2012, and is now recognized as the world’s pre-eminent industry-development event.
The goal of the conference and exhibition is to advance industry development by sharing recent experiences from development, demonstration and technology transfer efforts. It aims to accelerate development by stimulating collaboration between companies, researchers and development centres. It also targets engagement of operators with experience in related marine and power industry sectors.
Hosted by Marine Renewables Canada in partnership with the Government of Canada, Government of Nova Scotia, and Offshore Energy Research Association, the 2014 ICOE will be a North American first.

In collaboration with FORCE, EMEC held a workshop for international open-water test centres in Halifax, Canada, on 7th November 2014, 0930 – 1400. The event followed the International Conference on Ocean Energy (ICOE).
Aim:
To bring together international open-water test sites, to build on EMEC’s Global Ocean Energy symposium held in 2013, to establish the global network focused on collaborative opportunities for test centres in support of the developing ocean energy industry.
Objectives:
- Share updates from the last 12 months on progress and challenges from facilities around the world
- Provide a forum to discuss key R&D topics
- Identify actions to forge relationships and knowledge transfer between test sites
