About SR Marine Conference
Scotland’s wave and tidal industries continue to break new ground in both technology and project development. While the sectors face challenges finding a route to market the publication of the UK Government’s Industrial Strategy and the Scottish Government’s Energy Strategy provide new opportunities. Join us to debate these challenges and opportunities and learn about the cutting-edge developments helping build these industries of the future. This conference will look at the following questions:
- What does the Scottish Government’s Energy Strategy mean for wave and tidal?
- How can these sectors benefit from the UK Government’s Industrial Strategy?
- What are the innovations driving forward the wave energy sector?
- How are we building a tidal energy industry?
Why attend?
- Hear about the latest UK and Scottish Government policy
- Discuss, debate and influence the decisions which are being taken to benefit the sector
- Meet with others to network and share ideas
Who should attend?
The programme of speakers will bring together industry leaders, public sector representatives and investors to discuss the latest policy issues affecting wave and tidal energy in Scotland.

Unfortunately EMEC is no longer available to attend this event, however Sandy Kerr at ICIT will be giving an update on EMEC’s behalf.
The trip is being organised by the Maritime Association Sogn og Fjordane, GCE Subsea and Sogn og Fjordane County Municipality. The three day event from 12th-14th September focuses on tidal, wave, wind power, maritime hydrogen technology and off grid energy systems.
The event will be a great opportunity to network and develop new projects together with Norweign and international partners.
The workshop aims to bring businesses, R&D institutions, public administration and educational institutions together to discuss potential projects and partnerships within reneweable energy, subsea and hydrogen technologies.
Speakers form Norway, Orkney Islands, USA and New Zealand are confirmed, and there will be a number of Norwegian, international and EU participants.
For the full programme, visit: Study and Business Collaboration Trip Programme.
EMEC’s Technical Manager, Elaine Buck, will be attending the 12th annual Ocean Renewable Energy Conference on 13th-14th September 2017 in Portland, Oregon.
The conference provides attendees a forum to share new ideas and concepts, opportunity to learn from leading-edge practitioners and policy-makers, information about new research, results, and thinking, and the chance to network with industry leaders and experts from utilities, supply chain, investor, government, and academia. No conference does a better job of bridging national policies and regional implementation, with a real-world focus on accelerating project development.
NOT TO BE MISSED:
Thursday 14 September 2017 – 9.30am – 10.45am: PMEC SETS: Making the Most of a Regional Asset
Marine Hydrokinetic Track
The Pacific Marine Energy Center’s South Energy Test Site should be operational by 2020. Once complete, this facility will be an anchor asset for the region, attract wave energy companies to build, transport, deploy, operate, and decommission their respective technologies. The European Marine Energy Centre has been operational for several years, and represents a model that PMEC SETS and the Pacific Northwest can emulate. This panel will discuss PMEC SETS and how we can make the most of this opportunity.
Speakers:
- Gareth Davies, Managing Director, Aquatera
- Brian Polagye, co-Director, Northwest National Marine Renewable Energy Center
- Belinda Batten, Executive Associate Dean, College of Engineering,Formerly NNMREC Director
- Steve Dewitt, U.S. Department of Energy
- Elaine Buck, European Marine Energy Centre

EMEC will be involved in the following aspects of this year’s Orkney International Science Festival:
Hydrogen for Orkney
13 September 2017, 11:30am – 12:30pm
A new European project to be launched later this month will bring ten hydrogen-powered vans to Orkney. The aim is to tackle grid constraints by turning surplus electricity into hydrogen for local transport, as Nigel Holmes of the Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association and Jon Clipsham of EMEC explains, with the help of local participants.
The tides of Ushant
13 September 2017, 2:00pm – 3:00pm
The island of Ushant off the coast of Brittany now generates much of its own electricity from the fast tides. Denis Bredin sets the scene with pictures of the island and its beaches and lighthouses. Speakers from SABELLA and EDF describe the tidal power scheme.
This session will be chaired by EMEC’s Managing Director, Neil Kermode.

The MET- CERTIFIED project partners would like to invite you to attend a free workshop held in Nantes, France on Tuesday 24 October.
The workshop is designed to actively involve all stakeholders around certification, from banks and insurers to consenting authorities, technology developers, test facilities and certification bodies. During the workshop, experts will explain the system that is under development under the umbrella of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Stakeholders are invited to share their expectations and needs from the system.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The MET-CERTIFIED workshop has been established to gather feedback from the industry on what is required to reduce the risks of marine energy projects through certification. Therefore, the workshop encourages the participation of marine energy technology developers, supply chain companies, classification agencies, test laboratories, project developers, financiers and insurers. However, the workshop is open to all interested parties to attend.
EMEC’s Performance Test Engineer, Anna Southall, will be attending.

Speaking at OEE 2017
Wed 25th October | 14:00 – 15:30 | From oil & gas to data centres – which market opportunities?
Multi-MW offshore farms run by EU utilities model is one way to market. Yet ocean energy technologies are increasingly finding routes to market outside of this model. Can markets such as islands, hydrogen generation or storage/off-grid solutions offer higher returns today? Are PPAs with data centres, distilleries, O&G platforms, aquaculture a valid business model to bridge the gap to commercialisation?
Chair: Declan Meally, Head of Department – Emerging Sectors, SEAI
- John McGlynn | Sustainable Marine Energy | on the opportunities of off-grid power supply
- Lisa McKenzie | European Maritime Energy Centre | on using tidal energy to create hydrogen as a form of storage.
- Bohdi Sarkar | EC-OG | on using tidal turbines with batteries on autonomous environmental monitoring platforms and oil rigs.
- Reda Tidjani | Dell | on software for use in the marine environment.
The full conference programme is available to view online.
We look forward to seeing you there.
