Exhibition
This year is gearing up to be one of the most exciting exhibitions we’ve ever had.
We are showcasing the vast array of marine renewables activities taking place in Orkney right now. Our exhibition stand (ORK 19 in the Orkney Pavilion of the Highlands and Islands area) will include an array of wave and tidal energy models, highlight the numerous European-funded research and innovation projects that EMEC are involved with, and feature videos of marine energy activities in Orkney.
More technologies tested than anywhere else: EMEC’s current wave and tidal energy clients span eight European countries, all testing their innovative technologies here in Scotland, and all represented on our stand at All-Energy 2017.

FORESEA – free access to Europe’s leading test sites: We’ll be promoting the FORESEA (Funding Ocean Renewable Energy through Strategic European Action) programme funded by Interreg North-West Europe. Pop past to find out how the programme could help you get free access to our real-sea test sites in Orkney.
EU funded research and innovation: Come and speak to us and our clients about the Horizon 2020 projects that we’re involved in (FloTEC, WaveBoost, Ocean_2G, InToTidal, and CEFOW), and OCEANERA-NET funded LAMWEC.
Witness hydrogen generation: We’ll also be showcasing the pioneering Surf ‘n’ Turf project which will convert tidal and wind energy into hydrogen. A model will be on display so you can witness hydrogen generation with your own eyes!
EMEC speed updates
We’re bringing together some of the leading players in ocean energy for a fast-paced speed update session discussing some of the R&D challenges facing the industry, as well as progress reports from the developers testing at EMEC.
This is session will take place from 1230 in the Wave & Tidal Seminar Theatre within the exhibition area (to the back of EMEC’s exhibition stand – ORK 19). There’s limited seating so best to come along early to claim your spot.

Session 2.1: Blue jobs in the ocean energy sector

If managed well, oceans can offer great potential for the maritime economy, both for traditional and emerging activities. Today, in the EU, the economy represents roughly 5.4 million jobs and generates a gross added value of almost €500 billion a year. Ocean energy is the next generation of renewable energy that could contribute to the transition to the low-carbon economy of the future and the fight against climate change. Europe is taking the lead globally with over half of wave and tidal energy companies coming from the EU. We have a good chance to maintain leadership in a global market expected to be worth hundreds of billions of euros in the next decades. Making ocean energy a success will mean big business and more high-skilled jobs. It is estimated that approximately 27,000 jobs could be created in the sector by 2035 under favourable conditions.
This session will discuss how jobs in the ocean energy sector can promote the sustainable development of the blue economy and ensure global opportunities for the EU.

The MET-Certified project partners would like to invite you to attend a free workshop to learn about the latest developments in standardisation and certification for marine energy projects under IEC and IEC RE.
Who should attend?
The MET-Certified workshop has been established to gather feedback from the industry on what is required to reduce the risks of marine energy projects through certification. Therefore, the workshop encourages the participation of marine energy technology developers, supply chain companies, classification agencies, test laboratories, project developers, financiers and insurers. However, the workshop is open to all interested parties to attend.

Lisa MacKenzie, EMEC’s Marketing and Communications Manager, is attending the 6th International Association for Tourism Economics (IATE) Conference in Rimini, Italy, on 23rd June 2017. Lisa is speaking in a round table session focused on blue growth and tourism.
The ‘blue’ economy, in Europe, represents roughly 5.4 million jobs and generates a gross added value of almost €500 billion a year (EU Commission, 2016). Moreover, coastal tourism is considered one of the sectors that have a high potential for sustainable jobs and growth. The IATE Conference Round Table on Blue Economy and Tourism will bring together representatives from the academic, institutional and entrepreneurial worlds, to meet and discuss on how they can cooperate to enhance blue economy and sustainable growth, through innovation in relation to maritime context, considering the significant impact that tourism has on the environment.
EMEC was invited to speak at the event after winning ‘Blue Economy Business of the Year’ at the European Commission’s Blue Economy Business Awards in September 2016.

In association with Ocean Energy Europe, and part of the Energy Day programme of EU Sustainable Energy Week, EMEC will be showcasing the pioneering advancements that are taking place in marine renewables in Orkney to the public. Steven Pyke, EMEC’s Systems Developer, will present an update on the Ocean Energy Techno-Economic Assessment Process, that is being developed via a Knowledge Transfer Partnership with Strathclyde University. The Techno-Economic Assessment Process will form part of an integrated evaluation and development pathway for wave and tidal energy companies.
