Programme
Day 1 @ 10.30am: How do MRE projects handle the social impact on maritime users?
Oliver is speaking in this session, providing an insight into the lessons learnt from 10 years of marine energy experience.
Poster presentation
EMEC is also presenting a poster on the Integrated Marine Energy Measurement Platform that EMEC has developed to measure a variety of parameters in strong tidal flows, such as at EMEC’s Fall of Warness tidal test site, off the island of Eday, in Orkney.

Oliver Wragg, EMEC’s Commercial Director, will be attending the Global Marine Renewable Energy Conference (GMREC) in Seattle, Washington, USA 15-18th April 2014.

Oliver is chairing the North American Research Initiatives session at 10am on Wednesday 16th April. He will be joined by speakers from the three US national marine renewable energy centres (NNMREC, SNMREC, and HINMREC), the Victoria west coast wave initiative, the UNH Center for Ocean Renewable Energy, and the US Navy.

Christina Bristow, EMEC’s Research & Consents Officer, is speaking at the Pro-Tide Ecology Master Class on 14th May 2014 in the Isle of Wight.
The purpose of the Master Class is to look at current best practice in Environmental Impact Assessment for tidal energy projects and devices and to start to develop a protocol for environmental monitoring programmes.

Speaking at All-Energy:
Wave & Tidal Seminar Theatre: Vessel study (Day 1 & 2, 1120-1130)
Aquatera will provide an update on the Performance Review of Maritime Support Services for Orkney. The Scottish Government funded project has explored and characterised the performance of Orkney-located vessels and associated services carrying out marine renewables operations.
Wave & Tidal Seminar Theatre: Technology quick-fire update (Day 1 & 2, 1200-1315)
Wave and tidal energy developers testing at EMEC will provide quick-fire presentations on overcoming technical challenges through real-sea testing. This will include talks from Aquamarine Power, Pelamis Wave Power and Wello Oy from the EMEC wave test site, and Nautricity, Open Hydro and Scotrenewables Tidal Power on the tidal test sites.
Wave & Tidal 4: Biting the bullet – finance and funding (Day 2, 1045-1230)
John Griffiths, EMEC Technical & Compliance Director, is speaking at this session alongside Andrew Smith (Renewable Energy Investment Fund), David Hytch (Technology Strategy Board), and Dan Pearson (Meygen). The session is being chaired by Janine Kellett (Scottish Government) with a keynote from John Callaghan (The Crown Estate).
Wave & Tidal 5: Tidal the way forward (Day 2, 1330-1500)
John is chairing this session, which will include talks from Scotrenewables Tidal Power, Tidal Stream and The Carbon Trust.

As part of the Energy Day programme of EU Sustainable Energy Week, a public open day took place on Tuesday 3rd June 2014 to showcase the pioneering advancements that are taking place in marine renewables in Orkney.
EMEC, in partnership with Ocean Energy Europe, developed an exciting programme of events throughout the day, including opening up the main marine renewables sites around Orkney to visitors.

Due to the changing nature of test plans for wave and tidal devices, it is common for machines to move on and off site regularly. As such, the Pelamis P2 machine which was expected to be at Lyness for viewing, will now in fact be at sea at EMEC’s Billia Croo wave test site instead.
Please note that the planned session with Lyness Pier open to the public between 1400 and 1600 will therefore no longer take place.*

EMEC’s Managing Director Neil Kermode is speaking at the 1st International Symposium on Energy Challenges and Mechanics in Aberdeen in July 2014.
Neil will speak alongside EMEC’s non-executive Research Director Ian Bryden in session 15: Marine Energy which will showcase exciting developments in a rapidly developing marine energy sector. Technology developers are operating in one of the most challenging domains known to humanity and are drawing upon cutting edge research demonstrating a close partnership between academia and industry.

The annual marine renewables update at the Orkney International Science Festival will take place this Friday, 5th September, in the Orkney Arts Theatre, at 8.30pm.
The event – ‘Wave and tide: the year ahead’ – will provide an update on the work taking place at EMEC and throughout the marine renewables sector in Orkney. The programme will include talks on the following subjects:

The objective of the IECRE (IEC System for Certification to Standards Relating to Equipment for Use in Renewable Energy Applications) System is to facilitate international trade in equipment and services for use in Renewable Energy Sectors while maintaining the required level of safety:
- Operate a single, global certification System.
- Consistent understanding of what a certificate means, which certificates exists and how they are related.
- The System must be effective (avoid double work, which information must be given when and to whom) and will include a mechanisms to solve disagreements between stakeholders both on the content of the System as well as its correct application.
- The System aims for a harmonized application around the globe to ensure a uniform implementation and mutual recognition between certification bodies and test labs.
- The System will make use of high quality international standards and will allow for continuous improvement of the System.
