Background
Standards and guidelines are fundamental to the development of the marine renewable sector. In 2009 the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) released a suite of 12 standards and guidelines on behalf of the marine renewable energy industry (www.emec.org.uk/standards). Topics covered include assessment of energy resources, performance of devices, guidelines for certification, grid connection, tank testing, and project development.
Each document in the suite was written by an acknowledged expert and progressed by a working group with individuals representing technology developers, regulators, academia, utilities, and project developers – a true cross-section of the marine energy industry. More than 4,000 copies of these documents have been distributed worldwide, with 6 of these being progressed via the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) for global adoption as the first international standards for marine renewable energy.
As with any standards, it is important that these documents are reviewed regularly and the need for new standards identified. In March 2014, EMEC, in collaboration with the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult), facilitated a workshop to review the existing suite of EMEC standards and identify areas where new standards require to be developed.
Workshop details
The workshop was held on Tuesday 25th March 2014 at the BMA Conference Centre, Edinburgh.
The purpose of the workshop was to:
- Review the existing EMEC standards and guidelines and their further development by the IEC;
- Investigate the requirement for new standards or guidelines in additional topic areas.
The full workshop programme is available to download below:
The draft proposal for four new marine energy standards/guidelines, which was presented in the morning session and further explored in the afternoon breakout sessions is also available to download:

(open to public 1200-1400)
Tidal energy developers will showcase their innovative machines on Hatston Pier. *
Lyness Pier, Hoy (CANCELLED)
Due to the changing nature of test plans for wave and tidal devices, it is common for machines to move on and off site regularly. As such, the Pelamis P2 machine which was expected to be at Lyness for viewing, will now in fact be at sea at EMEC’s Billia Croo wave test site instead.
Please note that the planned session with Lyness Pier open to the public between 1400 and 1600 will therefore no longer take place.*
EMEC Billia Croo wave test site, Stromness
(open to public 1600-1800)
A chance to see inside EMEC’s substation and get an overview of the wave test site from the shore, with staff available on site to answer your questions. *
Caldale substation, Eday, EMEC Fall of Warness tidal test site
(open to public 1200-1700)
A chance to see inside EMEC’s substation with staff available on site to answer your questions.
If you have any queries or particular access requirements (e.g. wheelchair accessibility) please contact EMEC on the details above.
