EMEC is the world’s leading demonstration facility for testing wave and tidal energy technologies in the sea. Based in Orkney, the centre is also working on R&D projects looking at green hydrogen, floating wind and the decarbonisation of maritime and aviation sectors.
Business Development Officer (Graduate)
Salary: £31,562 – £34,306 (dependent on experience and qualification) | Type: Permanent post

We are looking for a Business Development Officer to identify, develop and secure opportunities for EMEC to grow its portfolio of projects as part of EMEC’s Innovation Team.
As Business Development Officer, you will lead and support with the scoping, development and submission of high quality proposals for both publicly and privately funded projects, proactively engaging with new and existing technology developers to progress testing and demonstration opportunities at EMEC.
You will advise and assist clients with fundraising activities, including the preparation of grant applications and supporting documentation for deployments at EMEC sites. You will also contribute to the delivery of EMEC’s consultancy plan, providing market insight, commercial input and technical coordination is required.
In the role, you will ensure smooth handover of secured projects to EMEC’s delivery teams, providing clear documentation, commercial context, and background to enable successful execution. Further, you will support project delivery by contributing to client reports, commercial assessments, and market analysis, ensuring outputs are accurate, insightful, and aligned with project objectives.
A post graduate degree in a discipline related to business or renewable energy, and knowledge of renewable energy markets is not essential, but would be advantageous.
Requirements:
- This role is co-funded by Orkney Islands Council and is based in Orkney. This must be the applicant’s first graduate level job and should commence within two years of graduation.
- Educated to HND level in a science, business or technical subject.
- Strong communication and interpersonal relations skills with an ability to adapt information and present it in an advantageous manner.
- Self-motivated, able to develop agreed initiatives, owning the task but maintaining a strong relationship with the team at EMEC.
- Ability to establish relationships with people (stakeholders, clients, potential clients) without undermining position for commercial negotiations.
