Events calendar
February – May 2021
Electrification can only go so far in achieving a carbon neutral economy. Hydrogen will play a key role in the decarbonisation of many areas of transport, heavy industry, and heating.
From the European Union to Australia, governments around the world are publishing hydrogen strategies pledging to ramp up production and uptake between now and 2050.
SPARK-H will support the growth of the clean hydrogen sector by showcasing the latest projects and innovations and providing a virtual space for partners across the value chain to meet, no matter where they are in the world. Spark-H is taking place online from 23 – 24 February 2021.
Not to be missed:
Day 2 | Tuesday 24 February | Panel discussion: Maritime
Managing Director, Neil Kermode, will be joining a panel session on maritime to discuss the how the use of green hydrogen can decarbonise the shipping industry. He will provide an overview of projects currently underway in Orkney which are striving to decarbonise the local inter isle ferry service. Within this session Neil will be joined by David Hannon, Strategic Projects Manager, Development and Infrastructure, at the Orkney Islands Council.

Renewable energy accounted for 97.4% of Scottish electricity demand in 2020. There is a significant opportunity for wave energy to become an important part of this future mix, with Scotland’s plentiful natural resources representing 10% of Europe’s wave energy potential.
In this webinar, experts will discuss the shape of the country’s wave energy sector in coming decades, drawing on previous experience in the market as well as highlighting opportunities for growth.
Date: Thursday 29th April
Time: 14.00 – 15.00 BST
Speakers
Matthew Finn – Commercial Director – EMEC
Gordon McIntosh – Director – AREG
Tim Hurst – Managing Director – Wave Energy Scotland
Cameron McNatt – Managing Director – Mocean Energy
Facilitator – Philip Bell, AREG Director
Complete your details on this link and AREG will send you a Microsoft Teams invitation to attend.
Join Dernis Mediavilla, Marine Energy Development Manager at EMEC, to discuss marine energy career development pathways with three other industry professionals at a seminar hosted by the International Network on Offshore Renewable Energy (INORE).

Registration is free. Attendees do not need to be registered for ICOE in order to join this discussion. Click here to register for the seminar.
James Walker, Hydrogen Manager at EMEC, will be participating in this month’s ‘Climate Cafe’.
The Climate Cafe is a monthly event organised by Aberdeen Climate Action. Each month focuses on a different topic related to climate action, research and solutions.
The three speakers for this month’s Climate Cafe are:
- Prof Paul Dodds (Energy Systems, UCL): The Role of Hydrogen and Fuel Cells in the Global Energy System
- James Walker (Hydrogen Development Manager, European Marine Energy Centre): Orkney Hydrogen Project
- Kathryn Logan (Energy Policy Researcher, University College Dublin): Hydrogen Buses and Trains.
This online version of our Climate Cafe will follow the same structure as our face to face cafes: three 20 minutes presentations will be followed by an opportunity for you to ask the speaker questions and participate in the discussion.
Details to join the Zoom meeting will be included in your confirmation email when you sign up. The event space will be open from 6:30, talks begin at 7 pm.

Join James Ferguson, EMEC Research & Development Engineer, to discuss testing marine renewable energy technologies and combatting the climate crisis on Monday, 10th May at 19:00 BST.
The event is hosted by the Scottish Seabird Centre.
The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) was set up in 2003 in the Orkney Islands to provide a plug-and-play environment to test and further develop marine renewable energy technologies, particularly wave and tidal converters. In parallel, the world has awakened to the climate reality, culminating in the 2015 Paris Agreement where 197 governments committed to limiting the global temperature increase to 1.5 ˚C. Since then, major economies, including the UK, have made legal commitments to achieve Net Zero carbon emissions. Today, Orkney produces over 100% of its electricity demand from renewable energy, is developing a hydrogen economy and was recently awarded £100M Islands Deal funding with Shetland and the Outer Hebrides, pursuing decarbonisation through projects such as the Islands Centre for Net Zero.
Reaching the net zero target will require social engagement, behavioural transformation, land use change, and critically, new technology deployment. New technology, however, also carries potential risks. Whilst renewable energy is inherently cleaner than fossil fuels, developers must consider environmental impacts of their devices. The Orkney Islands host a wide variety of flora and fauna, and EMEC has developed important expertise in environmental monitoring and consenting practices throughout its years of testing devices in marine energy environments.
This is a 1 hour online session, with a 45 minute presentation and Q&A.
A Zoom link for the event, full joining instructions and information will be provided via email the day before the event.
This event is FREE, but numbers are limited.
Please register to attend and please consider making a donation via the Scottish Seabird’s Centre Just Giving page to support their conservation and education work.
Elaine Buck, Technical Manager at EMEC, will be speaking at the virtual North Sea Decarbonisation Conference on Tuesday, 11th May at 12:45 BST.
Elaine will participate in a panel with key ocean energy sector players to discuss the potential of wave and tidal energy to become be the next generation of renewable energy technologies for Europe’s decarbonisation targets, and the projects currently in the pipeline driving this very aim.
Confirmed speakers also include Minesto, Orbital Marine Power, Mocean Energy, Ocean Energy Europe and the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult.
