Matthew Finn, EMEC’s Senior Business Development Manager, will be attending Wave Energy Scotland’s (WES) brokerage event for their third innovation call: Structural Materials and Manufacturing Processes. The brokerage event will take place on 9th August at the Hilton Grosvenor Edinburgh, Haymarket, Edinburgh to allow potential applicants the opportunity to meet members of Scottish industry and investigate partnerships. The agenda will run approximately from 10.00 until 15.30 with lunch provided.

The €11m FORESEA programme will host a webinar focused on its first call for support package applications on 16 August from 11:00 – 12:00 CEST (10:00 BST start time).
The webinar’s aim is to bring stakeholders up to speed on how the programme works and what is eligible for support. It will also provide insights to help strengthen project applications. The webinar will be interactive, with participants able to ask questions during the event.

The FORESEA programme was recently created to provide support for pre-commercial testing of ocean energy technologies in real-sea conditions, and help leverage further investment.
FORESEA can offer support packages to test at the following test centres:
- European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC): Orkney Islands, UK
- SEM-REV: Nantes, France
- SmartBay: Galway, Ireland
- Tidal Testing Centre: Den Oever, Netherlands
The first call for support package applications opened on 27 July, with a deadline of 21 September.

EMEC hosts an annual update as part of the Orkney International Science Festival. This years ‘Power from the Sea’ event will take place on 2nd September, 9-10pm in the Orkney Theatre in Kirkwall.
Our managing director Neil Kermode will lead the event which will provide an update on the latest developments in marine renewables in Orkney waters and the use of hydrogen for energy storage.

Programme
Matthew will speak in the ‘Optimising Tidal Technology’ session (Parallel 3B, 13:30-14:30), discussing the Surf ‘n’ Turf project. Chaired by Stuart Brown at FloWave, this session will focus on some of the key technology developments and initiatives in the tidal stream energy sector, and look at what we can learn from collaboration to help us commercialise and reduce costs. Andrew Scott of Scotrenewables Tidal Power is also lined up to provide an update on the technological progress of the SR2000.

Green Hydrogen – Opportunities for the Orkney Islands

You are invited to this public meeting in Kirkwall Town Hall to hear updates from partners in the European funded ‘BIG HIT’ project about their plans and the opportunities for using ‘green’ hydrogen produced from renewable energy in transport and heating. Speakers include:

What is BIG HIT?

BIG HIT (Building Innovative Green Hydrogen systems in an Isolated Territory: a pilot for Europe) is a five-year project aimed at overcoming local grid constraints through the use of hydrogen.
With over 50MW of installed wind energy capacity generating over 46 GWh per year of renewable power, Orkney has been a net exporter of electricity since 2013. However at present many of the islands’ wind turbines are often ‘curtailed’ due to local grid capacity restrictions, losing on average more than 30% of their annual output.
The BIG HIT project will see energy from the community-owned wind turbines on the islands of Shapinsay and Eday, two of the islands in the Orkney archipelago, used to produce hydrogen. The otherwise curtailed capacity will be used to produce low carbon ‘green’ hydrogen and oxygen using a 1MW Polymer-Electrolyte-Membrane (PEM) electrolyser.
BIG HIT will enable the deployment of 10 electric vans, each fitted with a hydrogen fuel cell range extender, and the construction of a hydrogen refuelling station.
In order to demonstrate the potential scope hydrogen also has for heat uses in Orkney, BIG HIT will install two hydrogen-powered boilers at suitable premises to provide zero carbon heat.

Matthew Finn, EMEC’s Senior Business Development Manager, will be attending the 3rd Atlantic Stakeholder Conference in Dublin, 27 September 2016.
Workshop 1A – Marine test sites and demonstration areas: hubs to drive blue technologies into the market place.
Matthew will speak in Workshop 1A alongside Joaquín Hernández-Brito (Plocan), Ana Brito e Melo (WaVEC) and John Breslin (SmartBay Ireland).
This workshop will provide a match-making opportunity and a best-practice exchange framework among relevant stakeholders and experts of the North East Atlantic Regions. The aim is to highlight this challenge and propose short-, mid- and long-term solutions to speed up the introduction of these new technologies in the market.
