Seanergy 2021

Excited to be getting back into the conference circuit and meeting people face-to-face again. This week we’re participating in the 2021 Seanergy Conference, taking place online and in-person in Nantes, France | 21 – 24 September.

James Walker, Hydrogen Development Manager at EMEC, is speaking alongside Lorna Slater MSP, Scottish Government Minister for Green Skills, Circular Economy and Biodiversity, in a panel looking at the role for hydrogen in the development of offshore renewables. James will share findings and recommendations from our recent report on supporting collaborative innovation activity between floating wind and hydrogen supply chains in Scotland and France.

Join James at the event, or view his talk online by registering here: https://www.seanergy-forum.com/en/seanergyforum/Register

You’ll also find James at the Networking cocktail “Interreg synergy for marine renewables” side event on 23 Sept. The event is being hosted by a coalition of Interreg projects addressing the various stages of innovation in developing marine renewable energy from technical and business services in MEA, to testing and demonstration opportunities in BLUE-GIFT, Ocean DEMO and AFLOWT.

FloTEC webinar: Lessons learnt from developing the world’s most powerful tidal stream turbine
Sep 23 @ 10:30 am – 11:45 am

FloTEC webinar

The Floating Tidal Energy Commercialisation (FloTEC) project, led by Orbital Marine Power, aimed to demonstrate how floating tidal systems can provide low-cost, high-value energy to the European grid mix. The project built on Orbital’s existing floating tidal technology to develop and demonstrate the world’s most powerful tidal stream turbine – the O2. The aim was to demonstrate an advanced, full-scale device in real conditions with high levels of reliability and survivability, while developing a greater understanding of factors such as installation, operation and decommissioning costs.

Thanks to FloTEC, the Orbital O2 2 MW tidal energy turbine was deployed at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney in 2021 and is scheduled to operate at EMEC for the next 15 years.

The FloTEC project however has come to an end, and the project team would like to provide insight into the work undertaken during the project. The O2 features a number of innovations, including up to 50 percent greater energy capture through enlarged rotors with a lower rated speed, full onsite access to all turbine systems through an optimised platform configuration, high performance blades and compatibility with local supply chain and infrastructure.

Supergen Annual Assembly 640

Exploring the role of Offshore Renewable Energy research and development on the pathway to net zero – The road leading from COP26

EMEC in Attendance

EMEC’s Commercial Manager Rob Flynn will be presenting at this year’s 4th Annual Assembly. Rob will be joining the ORE Industry Panel session on the 19th January at 11am to discuss Research and Innovation Priorities and opportunities for collaboration between Industry and Academia.

About the Supergen Annual Assembly

From the Supergen website here:

The Supergen Offshore Renewable Energy (ORE) Hub Annual Assembly, now in its fourth year, will be a three-day conference held online from Tuesday 18 – Thursday 20 January 2022.

With the upscaling of the UK Government’s ambitious targets to increase significantly the deployed capacity of offshore renewables within the next decade, including increasing the deployment of offshore wind from 30GW to 40GW, delivering 1GW of floating offshore wind by 2030, a newly announced £20m de Minimis of ring-fencing for tidal stream development and supporting up to double the capacity of renewable energy in the next Contracts for Difference auction, the need for increased research and innovation within Offshore Renewable Energy has never been more pressing.

Aligned with the outcomes of COP26, including a commitment by 40 world leaders to increase the uptake of clean technologies within five high-carbon sectors, including electricity, by imposing worldwide standards and policies, offshore renewable energy research and development will play a vital role in mitigating climate change. Our fourth Annual Assembly therefore gives those working in the offshore wind, wave and tidal energy sectors the chance to explore and debate cutting-edge research, find out about the latest opportunities and challenges in offshore renewable energy technologies, and network with the offshore renewable community, including academics, industry professionals and policymakers.
