EMEC and project partners would like to invite you to attend two tidal workshops that we are holding on Tuesday 12 November, the day following the International Tidal Energy Summit.
9.30am – 11am: MONITOR Tidal Developer Forum: Share learnings and provide feedback into this reliability focused project and support the progression of tidal energy.
11.30am – 1pm: Ocean_2G Tidal energy converter, testing & demonstration: end of project workshop. Providing insight into deployment and installation of Magallanes Renovables ATIR tidal platform by Leask Marine, sharing learning from testing at EMEC, power generation and project learnings & challenges.
Both events will be held in the Canary Riverside Plaza in London.

Neil Kermode, Managing Director, will be giving a keynote address to the Institute of International & European Affairs, demonstarting how the alchemy of turning seawater into electricity has finally been proven to be both predictable and achievable. He will argue that much of the development has occurred in the remote archipelago of Orkney and has spurred an energy revolution which has led to hydrogen and the mass roll out of electric vehicles. Mr Kermode will provide a personal perspective on the potential of marine energy to tackle climate issues and develop a new economy for the 21st century.

The Society for Underwater Technology are holding their North of England Evening Meeting on the 20 November at the Newcastle University with the theme of the Marine Energy Industry.
EMEC’s Operations and Technology Director, Jonathan Lindsay, will be giving a presentation on EMEC, with an overview of the numerous technologies that have tested across the test sites in Orkney and a look at the marine renewables industry as a whole highlighting important opportunities for the supply chain.

The Association for Renewable Energy & Clean Technology are hosting a one day event on ‘Decarbonising trucks, trains, boats and planes’ on the 3rd December 2019 in London.
Neil Kermode, Managing Director of EMEC will be attending and giving a presentation on Orkney and its aspirations for making hydrogen from renewable electricity to be used as a means of decarbonsing transport within the archipelago of islands.
About Decarbonising trucks, trains, boats and planes:
Electrification should help decarbonise passenger car transport in the future, but heavier haulage, shipping and aviation are far more challenging sectors. A new sub-target for strategic fuels for these sectors was introduced on 1st January 2019, via the amended Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation (RTFO). This Development Fuels sub-target requires oil companies to source a growing percentage of their supply from fuels such as renewable aviation and drop in fuels, hydrogen or synthetic natural gas made from eligible feedstocks. The eligible feedstocks comprise biomass wastes (but not those currently used in the making of biodiesel) and fuels made from renewable electricity.
What role might Development Fuels play, and what potential is there for more conventional biofuels, such as higher blend biodiesel and HVO? To what extent might off-gas grid, hard to heat housing compete for these fuels?
Come to this conference to find out what the fuels of the future might be for trucks, trains, boats and planes; hear about the technologies involved; meet the companies developing these fuels and see how the DfT is taking the first steps in encouraging the transformation of fuelling these hard-to-decarbonise sectors.

About NWE Making an Impact:
This is Interreg’s first impact event which will focus of the results achieved by the 83 NWE projects funded to date, and how to further support their uptake and impact. Through a wide variety of sessions and formats, the programme will offer unique opportunities to network, exchange and explore new potential collaborations.

Several Interreg projects led by EMEC will be exhibiting at the event to showcase project achievements and find opportunities to network and find synergies with other similar projects.
FORESEA (Funding Ocean Renewable Energy through Strategic European Action):
FORESEA is an €11m Interreg North West Europe project. Its helps bring offshore renewable energy technologies to the market by providing free access to North-West Europe’s world-leading network of test centres.
Since its launch, FORESEA has increased real-sea testing activity in the ocean energy sector. 19 technologies have successfully deployed at European test centres with FORESEA support, with more to come in the next 12 months.
Ocean DEMO (Demonstration Programme for Ocean Energy Pilot Farms and Supporting Technologies):
Ocean DEMO provides funding to developers of marine renewable technologies to test their products or services in real sea environments. This allows developers to move closer to market by demonstrating their technologies at full commercial scale. The first Ocean DEMO deployment is already ongoing and a there’s a lot more to come next year.
During this event, we will present the project’s plans and future impact on the ocean energy sector and North West Europe regions.
ITEG (Integrating Tidal energy into the European Grid):
ITEG is an €11 million Interreg North-West Europe (NWE) project launched in Orkney in 2018 to develop an all-in-one solution for the generation of clean predictable energy, grid management, and the production of hydrogen from excess capacity.

The annual Scottish Green Energy Awards will be held on the 5th December 2019 in Edinburgh.
Hosted by Scottish Renewables, the Scottish Green Energy Awards recognises the determination, innovation and creativity that has defined the growth of the renewables industry in Scotland.
This year, hydrogen achievements in Orkney are in the spotlight; Jon Clipsham, Hydrogen Manager at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) is shortlisted for the ‘Sustainable Development’ award at the 2019 Scottish Green Energy Awards, while the HyDIME (Hydrogen Diesel Injection in a Marine Environment) project is shortlisted for the ‘Outstanding Project’ award. Wave Energy Scotland’s 4th Annual Conference will be held on Thursday 5th December 2019, at the EICC Edinburgh.
The WES Annual Conference is a major networking event to help wave energy technology companies share their ideas, with presetnations from existing mature and new projects with the wave energy sector.
