NOT TO BE MISSED

Session A4: The Place of Commercial Marine Energy in a Smart, Flexible System

The energy system is changing fundamentally – with increasingly flexible networks, a changing role for large utilities and generators building their investment case on stacking flexibility services. Join us to discuss where this new world is heading and what it could mean for the future of commercial tidal and wave energy.

Jon Clipsham: ‘Integrating Hydrogen Electrolysers with Tidal Energy Systems’

Orkney has an abundance of renewably produced electricity however the current grid is already constrained, restricting the progress of new wind, tidal and wave energy projects. Therefore, innovative projects are being developed to use Orkney’s energy in different ways. EMEC has invested in an electrolyser to convert tidal and wind power to hydrogen which can subsequently be used directly as a fuel or chemical feedstock, or in combination with a fuel cell to generate electricity. The integration of renewable energy with the manufacture of an explosive, and potentially dangerous chemical has meant a culture shift within the organisation, which has had to embrace new technologies and methodologies from a different sector. EMEC is the first organisation to produce hydrogen from tidal energy.

EIMR Conference @ Pickaquoy Centre
Apr 24 – Apr 27 all-day

Environmental Interactions of Marine Renewable Energy Technologies (EIMR) is an international conference hosted at different sites across the Scottish Highlands and Islands region, led by the University of the Highlands and Islands (UHI) and Heriot Watt University (HW).  The conference will explore the interactions of wave and tidal energy technologies with the environment.

EIMR 2018 will be held at the Pickaquoy Centre, Kirkwall, Orkney from 24-27th April 2018.

About EIMR:

The International Conference on the Environmental Interactions of Marine Energy Technologies (EIMR) aims to serve as a major forum for global researchers and professionals to come together to present their latest research, results, and ideas and strengthen relations between the emerging marine renewables industry, research laboratories, and universities.

Previous conferences in Kirkwall, Orkney (2012) and Stornoway, Lewis (2014) – hosted by Heriot-Watt University and the University of the Highlands and Islands – explored the interactions of wave and tidal energy technologies with the environment. Since then, wave and tidal testing and commercial deployments have progressed in Scotland and worldwide.

The industry, regulators and academic researchers now have real world experience that has generated valuable lessons about effective methods and the relative significance of different interactions.

Speaking at EIMR:

  • Caitlin Long, Consents and Project Officer,  will be presenting on ‘Understanding wildlife displacement using data from real-sea testing of wave and tidal devices’ and ‘Developing a streamlined consenting process at a tidal test site’
  • Florence Ungaro, Project Manager, will be presenting on ‘Critical review of anti-fouling strategies used on marine renewable energy converters deployed in real sea conditions’

About ICOE 2018

Organised in 2018 by BlueSign in partnership with the Normandy region, Manche Department, Le Cotentin Communauté d’Agglomération and Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, ICOE will be held in Cherbourg, Normandy, from June 12th to 14th in La Cité de la Mer.

Held every two years since 2006, ICOE aims at gathering stakeholders from the sector of ocean energies (tidal, wave, salinity gradient, ocean thermal energies) and sharing the most recent experiences on research, technology transfer efforts and technological demonstration.

The purpose of the event is to accelerate development by stimulating collaboration between companies, researchers and development centres. It also targets engagement of operators with experience in related marine and power industry sectors.

In 2018, ICOE will join forces with Seanergy – the largest event on Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) in Europe – which brought together in 2017, 3,500 experts and professionals, 220 exhibitors and helped organizing more than 800 business meetings.

The complementarity of these two events aims to combine scientific content and business opportunities in order to:
•Disseminate recent technical experiences and demonstration from ocean energy research
•Generate business for companies of the ocean energy sector
•Promote the economic and societal dimension of ocean energy
•Attract young people to work in the ocean energy field
