News this week

Visits to EMEC last week included the Electric Power Research Institute together with leading environmental consultants from the USA. They enjoyed a trip out to Eday with Jennifer Norris and met Mike Cockram who is conducting environmental monitoring for EMEC on Eday. They also visited the EMEC offices and the Wave Test Site at Billia Croo. Scottish & Southern Energy also had a trip out to the Tidal Test Site. Scottish Renewables came on a fact finding mission around Orkney’s renewable projects including EMEC.

Orkney Renewable Energy Forum (OREF) visited Eday on Saturday and were lucky with the weather and particularly the chocolate cake!

The residents of Eday enjoyed their own opening of the Tidal Test Site on Saturday 22nd September, having tours of the substation, viewing the EMEC DVD and enjoying a cup of tea and a biscuit. We were delighted to see so many of the islanders, young and old see picture above. This was a forerunner for the official opening which is to take place on Friday 28th September by First Minister of Scotland, Alex Salmond. More information about this invitation only event will be posted in the next two days – watch this space!

OpenHydro are working hard in Orkney particularly in the Fall of Warness.

Jennifer Norris our Research Manager and Eloi Droniou our Hydrodynamicist were in Portugal for the EWTEC conference. A lot of interest was shown in the monitoring that EMEC has put in place or is in the process of commissioning. We hope to be working closely with the Wave Energy Centre in Portugal. Lots of interest was also shown in the numbers of developers planning to deploy at EMEC. Eloi is currently in Brest on an Ocean Wave Data User Workshop.
