News this week

Work continues at the Fall of Warness with two developers and in view of that, we have issued a press release to remind mariners of the possibility of vessel manoeuvres in that area.

EMEC reminder to mariners

EMEC, is making a fresh request for shipping to give a wide berth to the tidal energy test site off Eday.

Work is currently taking place in the Falls of Warness, in preparation for the deployment of a tidal turbine later this year.

A barge carrying a large crane is stationed in the area. Other vessels, including the Orkney Towage Company tug Harald, are involved in the operation as well.

A notice to mariners was issued before the work got under way, asking shipping to allow plenty of sea room when passing the tidal test site.

Visitors this week have included 2 MSP’s, Joe Fitzpatrick and Nigel Don, members of the cross party group on renewables and working with John Swinney and Jim Mather. We also welcomed a Scottish Development International visit by Andrew Monaghan accompanying Professor Kevin Bennett, Director of the Energy Research Centre at the University of Cape Town. They had a blue sky visit to the Fall of Warness fortunately and returned, vastly impressed with the scale of works underway there at the tidal site. True pioneering spirit was mentioned! Photograph above shows Andrew on the left and Kevin on the right, down at Billia Croo.

Next Thursday evening, July 10th, sees the official opening of an exhibition at the National Museum in Edinburgh, by First Minister, Alex Salmond MSP, entitled, “Scotland: A Changing Nation”. Please see http://www.nms.ac.uk/scotland_changing_nation.aspx for further information. EMEC is particularly pleased to have it’s DVD playing in the exhibition, interspersed with interviews with leading marine energy academics such as Stephen Salter. Firmly putting Scotland, and particularly Orkney, on the map in the forefront of the marine renewable industry. EMEC, in the form of Edwina Cook, will be represented at this occasion and she will be happy to meet anyone else attending.
