Green Energy Awards 2008

TRAILBLAZERS WIN SCOTLAND’S BIGGEST GREEN AWARDS

Winners announced at Green Energy Awards 2008

Trailblazing businesses and individuals who have played a key part in helping reduce Scotland’s carbon footprint have won major accolades at the Scottish Renewables Green Energy Awards.

Winners of the seventh annual awards, sponsored by npower renewables, were announced at a gala ceremony on Thursday, December 4, at the Assembly Rooms in Edinburgh.

The event saw over 700 individuals from communities, the European renewables industry and from the world of politics and the media attend the awards. Leader of the Labour Party in the Scottish Parliament Iain Gray MSP delivered the keynote speech at the event.

Ireland’s Energy Minister, Eamon Ryan TD congratulated Dublin based OpenHydro on their win of the Best Renewable Innovation Award for Scotland’s first ever grid connected tidal turbine off the coast of Orkney and said, “I am delighted to see this level of cooperation between the Irish and Scottish renewable industries, as we work towards developing our respective energy sectors. Both Governments are already examining the possibility of developing a joint electricity grid and the potential benefits for the energy industries in both countries will be enormous. We already have a distinct advantage, with our shared location close to the Atlantic and North Sea, which will allow us to excel particularly with tidal and offshore wind. I must commend Scottish Renewables for organising this event, which provides an incentive for business and encourages the development of new and innovative technologies.”

Jason Ormiston, Chief Executive of Scottish Renewables, said: “The winners and finalists at the Green Energy Awards are all heroes, highlighting an excellent year for the renewable energy industry in Scotland.

The Green Energy Awards demonstrate that projects of all scales can have major benefits. The Isle of Eigg electrification scheme uses small scale renewables to deliver green, affordable and reliable electricity to a remote community that struggled with diesel generators in the past. At the other end of the scale, Glendoe is a reminder of the days when Scotland first led the world in hydro and witnessed an enormous civil engineering exercise to bring power to the Glens. This centuries hydro projects will help in the fight against climate change and provide reliable sources of power.

Renewable energy can place Scotland at the forefront of green energy delivery in Europe and lead us out of recession. The projects recognised in the Green Energy Awards single out excellence and reflect a growing body of evidence that Scotland is moving towards a flourishing low carbon economy.”

Paul Cowling, Managing Director of npower renewables, the headline sponsor of the Scottish Green Energy Awards, said: “The renewables industry is an extremely dynamic sector and the high calibre of the winners demonstrates this. npower renewables is committed to investing in green energy in Scotland. Our portfolio of wind, hydro and marine highlights this and we are looking forward to extending this over the next year. We congratulate all the winners, as well as Scottish Renewables for acknowledging the contribution thousands of people in Scotland make to ensure Scotland’s green future.”
