EMEC joins Team Stromness event as part of Scottish Renewables Festival

EMEC, the wave and tidal energy test centre, will be exhibiting alongside a range of Stromness projects this Saturday (12 June).

The “Showcasing Team Stromness” event, being held in the Stromness Community Centre, coincides with the Scottish Renewables Festival being held all this week.

Neil Kermode, EMEC Managing director said: “the Scottish Renewables Festival is intended to improve awareness of renewable energy projects across the country.”

“There is a real buzz around the growing Marine Renewables industry in Orkney, and we are keen to explain the part EMEC plays in providing test facilities for developing technologies.”

“Since our offices are based in Stromness, we are delighted to join the Team Stromness event. This will broaden the information available for local people to include marine renewables, with EMEC staff on hand to answer any queries.”

Through participating in the event EMEC hopes to raise awareness amongst the local public about the wider benefits marine energy in terms of:

  • Sustainability- making our contribution to tackling climate change, using resources that are clean and infinite
  • Security of supply- making Scotland’s energy more secure and less dependent on imports
  • Economy- creating jobs, delivering investment into communities, and switching our economy to low carbon which in the long term will be more affordable

Niall Stuart, Chief Executive of Scottish Renewables, said: “The Scottish Renewables Festival is a great opportunity to celebrate Scotland’s incredible successes in renewables. We produce over 40 per cent of all renewable electricity in the UK, are home to Europe’s biggest wind farm, and leading the world in the development of offshore wind, wave and tidal energy.

“As a result, more and more communities are looking to renewables to power their economies and the sector will create tens of thousands of highly paid and highly skilled jobs across the country over the coming years.”

EMEC will be joining the wide range of other Stromness projects to showcase its work at the Stromness Community Centre from 10-4 on Saturday 12 June 2010.
