Blog: NY Times report on marine renewables in Orkney

“The forefront of wave and tidal energy research” Mark Scott, The New York Times

During a recent visit to Orkney, Mark Scott, Reporter for The New York Times, paid a visit to EMEC’s wave and tidal test sites, EMEC’s clients Wello Oy, Seatricity and Scotrenewables, and met some of the local companies that are supporting the sector.

His article – ‘Off Scottish coast, harnessing motion of ocean waves’ - has been published online and provides an intriguing insight into the marine renewables sector here in Orkney with some anecdotes of those testing machines and working in the industry.

“If we don’t face surprises, we aren’t learning” Timo Lotti, Wello

The United States are becoming increasingly interested in the potential that wave and tidal power has to offer, and Mark reports that up to 15 percent of US generated electricity could come from these renewable sources in the new two decades.
