Blog: Marine Scientist: Environmental interactions with marine renewable energy

Check out the article below by Dr Anne Linley from the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC), who attended the EIMR (Environmental Interactions with Marine Renewables) conference in Orkney in May 2012. She discusses the importance of Orkney’s role in the development of the marine renewables industry, and the findings so far regarding environmental interactions with marine renewable energy devices.

It is still early days, and the marine renewables industry is developing close to the limits of understanding on how wildlife interacts with marine energy devices. Therefore, novel, targeted research, such as that taking place at EMEC (see: EMEC site specific projects), is essential to the successful development of the industry. The article discusses some of the findings so far, with little evidence to date suggesting wave and tidal energy devices have a negative effect on wildlife in the habitats in which they are deployed.
