Blog: Marine renewables jobs in UK up 100% since 2010

RenewableUK, the trade body for the UK wind and marine renewables sector, has published an update of its 2010 study into employment in the wind, wave and tidal energy sectors. Working for a Green Britain and Northern Ireland 2013-23 reveals that together these important growth industries now directly employ 18,465 people full time: the equivalent to three times the number of people employed in UK coal industry (5,005 in June 2013 according to DECC) and a 74% increase in jobs since 2010.

When including indirect jobs (companies that supply goods and services to the sector) the wind, wave and tidal energy industries support the employment of over 34,000 people.

For marine energy, the number of direct jobs in the UK now stands at 1,724 FTE, up from the 800 jobs recorded in 2010: an increase of over 100%. The report  highlights that the majority of employment in marine technologies is located in England and Scotland. In Scotland, marine employment constitutes the highest proportion of direct wind and marine energy employment, reflecting the unprecedented number of operational devices being developed and tested here.
