Blog: Bagging the Bruck at Billia Croo
Thanks to EMEC staff who headed out to Billia Croo yesterday on a fresh, bright Sunday morning to take part in Orkney’s annual beach clean up – Bag the Bruck.
Organised by Outdoor Orkney, Bag the Bruck is a community initiative, set up to keep Orkney’s coastline beautiful, protect it’s wildlife and help the world’s oceans. It covers 50 sites and is attended by up to 500 people. A vast amount of rubbish is collected and helps to prepare Orkney’s beaches for the Summer ahead.
Our beach cleaners at Billia Croo reported finding lots of plastic bottles, foam and polystyrene, but less general litter than previoius years. The beach was left nice and tidy, and it would be fantastic if we could keep all our beaches that way.
The ‘Pick up 3 Pieces’ campaign encourages all individuals to ‘do their bit’ throughout the whole year by picking up just three pieces of litter, from wherever they see it. A task that takes a matter of seconds but that collectively removes a massive volume of harmful waste each year.
