Sustainable energy talk
“Sustainable Energy – without the hot air”
A talk by David Mackay, Chief Scientific Advisor to the UK Government’s Department of Energy and Climate Change
Friday 5th March
7pm-8pm, Upper Room, King Street Halls
David MacKay, Chief Scientific Advisor to the Department of Energy and Climate Change and author of the influential book ‘Sustainable Energy – without the hot air’ will be in Orkney this week to visit the European Marine Energy Centre.
The Chief Scientific Advisor’s role is to ensure that the Department’s policies and operations, and its contributions to wider Government issues, are underpinned by the best science and engineering advice available. To help with this, David Mackay is making EMEC his first stop to see progress in wave and tidal energy whilst visiting Scotland.
In his popular book “Sustainable Energy – without the hot air” he explains that the public debate about our energy crisis will be a waste of time – unless we start using numbers we all understand.
“To survive, we need to know how much energy we use, decide how much energy we would like to use in the future and learn how much energy each future source could supply. Then we can have a constructive conversation about our realistic options.” View the book free online.
Whilst in Orkney, he will be giving a talk on Friday at 7pm in the King Street Halls. It will be open to the public, and anyone with an interest in renewable energy and climate change is encouraged to come along and hear one of this country’s most influential scientists speak on the topic.
“EMEC is leading the effort to get wave and tidal energy working, so we are delighted David is coming to see how we are getting on. We also thought that giving Orkney the chance to hear from such an informed and influential figure was too good an opportunity to miss, so we are delighted David has agreed to this evening meeting” said Neil Kermode, Managing Director of EMEC.
