Blog: Tidal energy to produce hydrogen at the Fall of Warness
Does hydrogen hold the key to Orkney’s marine energy sector?
Neil Kermode was on BBC Radio Orkney this morning discussing a new project in which hydrogen will be produced from tidal energy generated at EMEC’s tidal test site at the Fall of Warness, off Eday. Funding for the project was announced last year – funding welcomed for wind-and-tidal initiative – as a means to get around the lack of new grid connection in Orkney.
“We expect to have this installed and working within the next year. People are doing this all around the world already in some respects, but nobody is doing it from tidal energy, and nobody faces the same grid constraints as we face here in Orkney. This is the big opportunity and will help us break out of the corner we find ourselves in due to the inadequacies in the grid”.
The interview is available to listen to on Radio Orkney’s SoundCloud – Around Orkney Friday 13th February – and begins 6:20 into the programme.
“We’re really keen to make sure that we can always say to people: “yes – bring your machine along, bring it in and test it”. So finding a way to use the energy is absolutely critical”.
What to know more?
EMEC is holding a public meeting next Wednesday, 18th February at 7pm in the Eday Heritage Centre. Everyone is welcome to come along and hear more about the hydrogen project, and how we plan to tackle local grid issues.
