News this week

EMEC recently commissioned Draka to deliver and extra 5,000 meters of 20kV subsea power cable to the test site in Orkney. Draka was the subsea power cable provider for EMEC’s site extension works last year – and recently shared with us a picture which shows the Draka cable on board the CS Sovereign being displayed on a news bulletin in Times Square, New York.

Stuart Baird, EMEC’s Operations Director was over in Thurso this week giving the IMechE Thurso branch an update on EMEC activity. Closer to home, Eileen Linklater, Client and Marketing Manager continued her tour around the local Scottish Women’s Rural Institutes, with visits to Quoyloo, Sandwick and Harray.

Looking ahead, there are two upcoming marine energy events worth noting:

“Orkney at the Heart of Marine Renewables” – Monday 14 February – 19:30 – St Magnus Centre, Kirkwall

Neil Kermode, Managing Director of EMEC, will be giving a talk at the Orkney Renewable Energy Forum on February 14, and he promises to be speaking right from the heart! On Valentines Day it is particularly pertinent to have an update on why Orkney is at the heart of marine renewable energy. This talk will take a look at where we are and will give a personal view of what we need to do to make a success of this.

“Power of Scotland” – Monday 14 February – 20:00 – BBC Radio 4

If you can’t make it to Neil’s talk, tune into BBC Radio 4 on Monday instead to hear him talk. David Miller, BBC Scotland’s Environment correspondent, tests the evidence as to whether Scotland can become the green energy capital of Europe, and Neil is interviewed on the marine energy perspective.
