Standards

EMEC - Standard documentsEMEC has coordinated the development of a suite of standards, on behalf of the marine renewable energy industry. Each document has been progressed by a working group with individuals representing technology developers, regulators, academia, utilities, and project developers - a true cross-section of the marine energy industry. These standards have recently been launched and are freely available for download by clicking below:

The development of these standards has been funded by the Scottish Government and the Department for Business, Enterprise and Regulatory Reform. If you would like to view the background behind the establishment of this suite of standards, please click here. Furthermore, if you wish to be put in touch with the leader of the industry group that has developed the specific standard, you can do so via contacting EMEC here.

* The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) has announced the formation of Technical Committee (TC) 114: Marine Energy - Wave and Tidal Energy Converters. Each participating nation will form a Mirror Committee - in the UK's case this has been designated PEL 114. John Griffiths of EMEC has agreed to take the Chair until September 2013. The standards marked have been submitted as a suggested work programme for TC 114.

Guidelines for Environmental Appraisal in the Marine Energy Industry

EMEC has aspirations to add a further environmental guideline which would identify a set of criteria to describe the environmental performance of a device. This may include the monitoring, reporting, audit and review of environmental performance. The document should be compatible with ISO 14001 requirements and may be used to simplify the consenting process for devices by providing a reference point for environmental performance e.g. of emissions to air/water, impacts on wildlife etc. The guide would refer to all stages of a device lifecycle, from construction, operation, maintenance, and inspection through to decommissioning. Funding is being sought to complete this work, and collaborative opportunities would be welcome.
