Marine Energy Test Area (META); Wales

Overview

In 2018, the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) Ltd signed an agreement with Marine Energy Wales to provide strategic advice to develop the Marine Energy Test Area (META) project in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Deepening the collaboration between the two test sites, EMEC seconded a member of our project team to work at META for six months to provide on the ground support for the day-to-day operation of the test facility.

META consists of eight pre-consented, non-grid connected sites located in and around the Milford Haven Waterway, providing the opportunity to test scaled devices, sub-assemblies and components.

EMEC’s role

  • Input into the initial feasibility stage of the META project.
  • Guided development of META providing strategic advice on: site selection, developer requirements, operational procedures, commercial development
  • Supporting the implementation of META’s processes and procedures.
  • Providing guidance on: accident incident investigation, developer lifecycle, data acquisition, permitting, consenting, installation, decommissioning.
  • Project Officer secondment into META for on-the-ground support including day-to-day operation of the test facility and assisting with client management, supporting META clients through their testing programme.
  • Facility review including gap analysis and development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the safe and efficient operation of META.

A word from META

Bethan Simes, META Project Manager, said:

“EMEC have almost two decades of extensive operating experience that we were able to draw on in developing our operating procedures for META. The learning and best practices that have been shared from the EMEC team have been invaluable in progressing META to the operational phase, meaning we haven’t had to reinvent the wheel and enabling us to get off the ground quickly.

“We look forward to a continued collaborative relationship with EMEC, as together these projects provide key innovation hubs in our respective regions and by working together, we can help accelerate this industry to the benefit of the UK and to reach our net-zero targets.”
