BCI FinalistDeveloper activity

Wello Oy has successfully installed the Penguin wave energy converter at the EMEC wave test site for the first time. The installation was conducted by a multicat vessel assisted by a harbour tug. See the full press release for further details.

Awards

EMEC are delighted to have been named the British Renewable Energy Flagship Project of the Year at the British Renewable Energy Awards .

EMEC has also been nominated for the ICE President’s Award for Energy Infrastructure in the British Construction Industry Awards. Winners will be announced later this year so watch this space.

Unfortunately, we did not walk away with the Large Project award at the Renewable UK Energy Awards held last week in London. It was great recognition to have been shortlisted in the prestigious awards, and congratulations go to the winners – Ormonde Wind Farm. Well done also to Aquamarine Power who won the Product and Innovation Award for the Oyster 800 device which is currently deployed at Billia Croo.

BIG Green Challenge

Congratulations to the Kirkwall Grammar School team who were crowned champions in the Big Green Challenge debating competition, having fended off competition by 24 other schools. Neil Kermode, who judged the local heat, was highly impressed with their awareness and knowledge of the issues surrounding renewable energy.

Media interest

There has been a plethora of media attention around EMEC and Orkney’s marine renewables industry lately. STV North aired a number of special reports on “Orkney: The Green Isles” on the 6pm news, the first of which featured EMEC’s Neil Kermode. All the week’s reports can be viewed again on STV Player (aired on 2nd, 3rd, and 4th July).

We have also hosted visits from Bloomberg News, France 3, Korean Broadcast System, and China Business News – all eager to hear about the ground-breaking advancements happening at EMEC.

Eday 5’s EMEC Cup

Finally, well done to Ronald, Keith, Chris, Aiden, and Steven for participating in the Eday 5′s EMEC Cup at the weekend. Congratulations to Sanday A who won the EMEC Cup following a battle against Eday in the final.
