EMEC Developer Research Forum

Terms of Reference

The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) actively participates in marine renewable energy research, where this is compatible with the centre’s principal aims. This involves proactive involvement with the public and privately funded research community represented by academia, industrial research institutions and the technology developer community.

EMEC’s research vision is to become an indispensable partner within a network of high quality, internationally recognised research stakeholders. As the world’s only accredited test centre for both wave and tidal energy technologies, EMEC represents a natural partner for any marine renewable research group looking at working in the marine environment.

At a local level, EMEC aims to make best use of its test facilities by coordinating a joint approach to industry-related research needs, as guided and informed by the EMEC Developer Research Forum (EMEC-DRF). EMEC coordinates this Forum, and encourages close liaison between the EMEC-DRF and its dedicated Monitoring Advisory Group (EMEC-MAG). The key Terms of Reference of the EMEC-DRF are:

  • To guide research and encourage developers to work collaboratively, sharing research findings to support monitoring requirements and reduce post-construction monitoring for future projects
  • To de-risk development activities through research and monitoring targeted towards addressing both regulatory and technical issues
  • To ensure that membership of the EMEC-DRF is offered to all EMEC developers, and to make it clear to all EMEC developers that membership of the group is welcomed and encouraged, but not in any way obligatory.
  • All willing members of the Forum will be fully recognised participants within appropriate funded research projects.
