Blog: WWF commend Orkney’s steps towards a sustainable future

We’ve just come across this interesting article – Orkney brown crabs could lead us all to clean, green marine energy – published on Herald Scotland. In it, Lang Banks, Director of WWF Scotland, expresses his admiration for two “ground-breaking initiatives” taking place here in Orkney.

“I think it is pretty amazing to think that a study about the humble brown crab could end up by helping to deliver a double win for the people of Orkney…

…a profitable, sustainable fishery and clean, green marine power industry.”

During a recent visit to the county, Lang was introduced to Orkney Fishermen’s Society’s project studying the sustainability of fishing practices in Orkney, part of which links to the development of marine renewables. Backed by Marine Scotland and the Crown Estate, the project includes mapping the routes taken by crab boats to inform the marine renewables community of sites important to other sea users.

Lang was also impressed by the developments taking place at EMEC which he learned about as he toured around the wave test facility at Billia Croo.

“Here’s hoping Orkney keeps rewriting history”
