Blog: Orkney – Island of the Future | Fully Charged
“It’s just extraordinary what’s going on here. It’s a real test bed for the whole country.”
Robert Llewellyn, of Red Dwarf and Scrapheap Challenge fame, came to Orkney last month for the Eco-Cars Electric Car Show where he showed off the BMW i8 that he used to traverse the country to get here. The electric car enthusiast gave his popular ironically-named “So electric cars are rubbish” talk to an audience of over 100 people at the Pickaquoy Centre in Kirkwall on 17th April.
Prior to the show, Robert went on a non-stop tour of mainland Orkney to see the pioneering renewable energy advancements taking place, and has documented this in a fascinating video on his Fully Charged YouTube channel. Needless to say, he was utterly impressed with Orkney’s energy vision:
“This is where they’ve proven that it’s possible to have 100% renewable energy for the vast majority of the time… They’re talking about how to use their excess power. It’s uncanny… And of course there’s lots of electric cars here because it makes an enormous amount of sense – they’re much cheaper to run and they’re not powered by coal. They’re powered by the little breeze I can feel now that’s turning that massive wind turbine that I’m looking at as I stand here.”
