Blog: H2Orkney Surf’n’Turf on BBC Brainwaves

“Wouldn’t it be good if we could store the energy generated from renewables from one day to the next?”

Our Managing Director, Neil Kermode, and Ian Garman of Community Energy Scotland, have featured on BBC Radio Scotland’s Brainwaves show.

In this episode of Brainwaves, Pennie Latin explores recent developments in hydrogen, focusing particularly on Orkney’s Surf ‘n’ Turf project: a unique pioneering project that aims to harness tidal and wave energy, convert it to hydrogen and then make it available again as electricity to charge the inter-island ferries berthed overnight in the soon to be developed hydrogen port in Kirkwall. The pilot project has been developed to help overcome local grid constraints on the Orkney Islands, as well as tackle the issue of intermittency of renewable power.

The programme is available on iPlayer for the next 22 days: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0739srq The Surf n Turf Concept infographic
