Blog: Extreme weather generates 14m wave at Billia Croo

Has anyone been keeping an eye on the live wave data at Billia Croo over the last couple of days?

Our north wave rider buoy reported a 21 metre wave early on Wednesday morning. However, as the data is streamed straight from the wave rider buoy to the website it is not subject to our strict quality control measures and therefore can occasionally show anomalies. Having now examined the data, we can confirm that this was a spike.

The highest wave recorded at Billia Croo during the recent storm, which saw wind speeds of up to 23.7 m/s at the test site, was 14.2 metres – still higher than the Old Academy Building where our offices are based!

The highest wave ever recorded by EMEC at Billia Croo remains at 17m.
