Blog: EMEC’s new Technical Business Development Manager

Elaine Buck has recently been seconded into the EMEC team from the Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult (ORE Catapult), taking on the new role of Technical Business Development Manager. Her main responsibility is to support EMEC in the development of projects for wave and tidal energy, and other sustainable and enabling technologies. She also acts as the liaison between the ORE Catapult and EMEC, identifying project opportunities, and bridging partners and funders to develop technical projects in line with both EMEC and ORE Catapult strategies.

What enticed you to work in marine renewables?

“My background began in marine surveying work, with the past 20 years in oil and gas geophysical exploration.  I travelled and lived in most developing countries – from Mexico, South America, and Asia – who were increasing exploration spending to exploit their oil and gas reserves.  I witnessed the degradation of the marine environment through the impact of coastal population increases and the resultant rise in demand for energy, backed by fossil fuels.  I realised this can’t go on, there is an environmental and sustainability issue to be addressed here.

“I therefore sought to expand my knowledge of the energy market by exploring renewables, and how wave and tidal energy will contribute to a low-carbon world. So I began my cross sector move from oil and gas to renewables in 2012 embarking on my MSc in Renewable Energy Development at Heriot-Watt’s Orkney campus – the International Centre for Island Technology.”

What attracted you to live and work in Orkney?

“Studying in Orkney meant that I was so close to the action: to where the wave and tidal developers were testing their devices at EMEC; getting to know the supply chain companies who were expanding their service offerings to include support for renewable energy; and networking within the Orkney Renewable Energy Forum. I knew I had to stay to gain experience where the action was!

“The work/life experience here is amazing. I love being able to go into my local grocer and give a hello and hug to the check-out person because they are my neighbour, or walk right out my back door and witness the wildness of the winds and ocean looking across at the Hoy hills and seeing the edge of Billia Croo where the wave devices are tested.

“My husband and I both fell in love with the environment, community and opportunities here in Orkney, at the same time!  That was a sign to put down roots.”

What do you like to do outside of work?

“I have two daughters – a 4 year old and a 14 year old – who I work hard for so they live in a better world. I try to run regularly, do yoga, and love to read read read. I am also taking a beginners crofting course, to learn how to better manage our land.  My husband and I love to cook and entertain, so if the sun is shining and the wind is not too high we are on the back patio with a sundowner and barbeque roaring!”
