EMEC is the world’s leading demonstration facility for testing wave and tidal energy technologies in the sea. Based in Orkney, the centre is also working on R&D projects looking at green hydrogen, floating wind and the decarbonisation of maritime and aviation sectors.

Chemical R&D Specialist

Salary:  Dependent on experience | Type: Permanent post
Location: Orkney, hybrid or remote | Hours: Casual / zero hours

We are interested in hearing from those with expertise as follows who are looking for an opportunity to help pioneer the energy transition and a clean energy future. We’re keen to speak to interested parties who would like to feed expertise into projects on a casual basis.

Responsibilities:
  • Support development and delivery of EMEC’s synthetic fuels strategy and services.
  • Research and assess chemical, energy systems and synthetic fuel focused R&D and technical work on EMEC projects.
  • Deliver technical, economic and market feasibility studies and demonstration projects to advance alternative fuels research and development including supporting technologies such as direct air capture and direct ocean capture.
  • Assist with the preparation of technical documentation including analysing and interpreting data, performing calculations and developing tools to support existing and emergent standards.
  • Work closely with EMEC’s business development team, supporting new bids and funding opportunities.
Requirements:
  • Educated to degree level (or equivalent experience) in relevant technical or scientific subject (e.g. chemical, process, industrial, or engineering), preferably related to hydrogen or synthetic fuels.
  • Strong communication, numeracy and commitment to safety.
  • Experience in renewables, energy systems, hydrogen and/or alternative fuel technologies.
