Vacancy: Electrolyser Research Engineer (KTP Associate)

Electrolyser Research Engineer (KTP Associate)

An exciting opportunity has become available to work full time on a 3-year Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) to support the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC)’s move to a commercially diverse business model. You will support the development of new electrolyser systems using precious-metal free electrodes optimised for use with renewable energy. Electrodes will be developed via rapid screen-printing, so reducing the capital cost component of hydrogen production.

Location: Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) All Saints Campus / European Marine Energy Centre, Orkney
Faculty / Function: Science and Engineering
Salary: £30,395
Closing Date: 17 June 2019
Contract Type: Fixed Term
Contracted Hours per week: 37.5

Qualifications required:

You will be required to have at least a master’s degree in chemistry or a related subject (e.g. chemical engineering).

Application requirements:

  • Electrochemical techniques, including but not limited to cyclic voltammetry, linear sweep voltammetry, impedance spectroscopy;

  • Physicochemical characterisation techniques, including but not limited to Raman spectroscopy, UV-VIS, scanning/transmission electron miscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy

  • Fundamental chemical and physical knowledge of water electrolyser, preferable with experience in electrolyser assembly;

  • The design and production of SPEs and inks. Experience in rheological studies is highly desirable;

  • Competence in both oral and written reports, which will be vital for the dissemination of the KTPs finings and results.

This KTP will require a strong willingness to learn in order to fill any knowledge skills gaps. As the role is split between MMU and EMEC (the first half of the KTP mostly based in Manchester, the second half mostly in Orkney), you must also be willing to travel between Manchester and Orkney where you will be expected to remain at either site for periods up to 3 months at a time.

Benefits:

      • £2,000 per year to spend on personal training;
      • attendance at two residential managerial workshops (each of one week’s duration);
      • opportunity to register on a higher degree (at a reduced or no cost);
      • opportunity of a permanent position with the company; 70% of host companies make a permanent job offer to their Associate at the end of the project.

For an informal discussion, please contact Dr Samuel Rowley-Neale (s.rowley-neale@mmu.ac.uk) or Prof Craig Banks (c.banks@mmu.ac.uk).

Apply by submitting a CV and covering letter detailing how you meet the criteria for the role through the MMU website:
