Press release: EMEC’s Catrin Sutherland up for Young Professional Award

The European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC)’s Commercial Development Officer, Catrin Sutherland, has been shortlisted for the ‘Achiever Award’ at the Scottish Renewables Young Professionals Green Energy Awards 2019.

The Young Professionals Green Energy Awards recognises those who have achieved beyond all expectations, those who are pioneering new ideas and have the drive and ambition to change the renewable energy industry for the better.

The Achiever category recognises people who have achieved outstanding personal development and growth or promotion within their role.

Catrin joined EMEC in 2016 with a first-class honour degree from Robert Gordon’s University, and was fast tracked into the position of Commercial Development Officer, a role central to the rapid growth of the business which has doubled in size over the last two years. Catrin’s key focus has been on supporting the development of new marine energy test and demonstration facilities around the world, as well as supporting EMEC’s commercial team with bid writing, contract development, project implementation and marketing.

Catrin’s manager, Matthew Finn, EMEC’s Commercial Manager said:

“In a sector predominantly led by male engineers, Catrin’s business acumen, focus and drive is the key reason we nominated her for this award. Commercially minded entrepreneurs will play an instrumental role in low carbon technologies breaking through into the mainstream and Catrin is driving this forward working at the forefront of this exciting and dynamic industry.”

Working at EMEC has provided me with countless opportunities to take on new responsibilities and make my mark on the sector, and for that I am incredibly grateful.

“It’s an honour to get to work with our clients first hand and help them realise their commercial potential by utilising EMEC’s lessons learned over the years. It has been a privilege working on so many exciting projects over the last two years and supporting them come to fruition.”

Alongside Catrin, three other Orcadian’s were shortlisted:

• Eibhlin Lee, from Orkney Islands Council’s Strategic Projects Team is competing in the same category at Catrin.
• Ryan Doull, from EMEC’s tidal energy client Orbital Marine Power, is shortlisted for the Project Development award; and
• Craig Stout is shortlisted for the Engineer award for his work with Offshore Renewable Energy Catapult.

Two employees from EMEC’s alumni client, SIMEC Atlantis Energy, have also been shortlisted, providing further recognition for the ocean energy sector.

Winners will be announced on Thursday 30th May 2019 at the Young Professionals Green Energy Awards 2019 in Glasgow.
