News this week

Mark Hull, Orkney’s Development Officer from Community Energy Scotland brought neighbouring development officers from Shetland and the Western Isles to visit EMEC this week. Community Energy Scotland is an independent Scottish Charity, supporting and funding community groups throughout Scotland to develop sustainable energy projects. The group were in Orkney to visit the island of Westray (who recently won a Green Energy Award work for their community energy work), and see other community wind turbine developments, but it was also a chance to introduce wave and tidal energy as a future sustainable source.

EMEC featured in a documentary on BBC Scotland this week. Business Correspondent Hayley Miller explored the potential for Scotland to fulfil its own power needs from renewables, and also to create a market, and employment, by developing and realising the potential of new technologies and exporting excess power. EMEC was featured as leading wave and tidal technology development in Scotland. BBC SCOTLAND INVESTIGATES: POWER OF SCOTLAND was broadcast on Tuesday 15th December on BBC One Scotland, but for anyone who missed it the programme can be viewed online via the BBC iplayer.

Finally, many thanks to those of you who have been in touch with comments and suggestions on our search for new, calmer, intermediate scale test sites. We are continuing to consult with local regulatory agencies and interest groups, but keen to hear further input from anyone with knowledge of Orkney waters. For more information, see last week’s press release.
