News this week
A waverider buoy was deployed in the Shapinsay Sound this week to gather data for our intermediate scale test site for tidal devices. The yellow buoy near the Head of Holland will measure wave height and current in the area for the next 6 months. Pictured is Chris Casely, EMEC’s Engineering Technician deploying the buoy from the MV Uskmoor.
EMEC was visited by Dr. Andrea Copping from the US Pacific Northwest National Laboratory’s (PNNL) Marine Sciences Laboratory. As the Senior Program Manager for marine and coastal waters Dr. Copping is currently leading PNNL’s ocean energy program, and met with EMEC’s Research Director Jenny Norris, and Managing Director Neil Kermode.
Neil also attended various Saltire Prize events this week including the inaugural Scottish Renewables Saltire Prize Lecture and meeting of the Saltire Prize committee. £10 million will be awarded to the team that can demonstrate in Scottish waters, a commercially viable wave or tidal stream energy technology that achieves the greatest volume of electrical output over the set minimum hurdle of 100GWh over a continuous 2 year period using only the power of the sea.
Next week (12 November) EMEC will be exhibiting on a joint stand alongside NaREC and Wave Hub at Innovate10 in London. Our three organisations provide a technology route map for marine renewables as independent development partners and proving grounds for wave and tidal energy prototypes. Hosted by the Technology Strategy Board, Innovate 10 will address all aspects of technology innovation, with a special focus on the commercial exploitation of the digital economy, healthcare markets of the future, energy generation and supply and the sustainability of the economy.
