The field of Marine Energy is developing rapidly and new and useful information is being produced. The following documents are highlighted by EMEC due to the informative and relevant content to this field:

Preliminary Tidal Current Energy: Device Performance Protocol

Document Information

Version 1.3 - February 2007
Commissioned by The Department of Trade and Industry
Prepared by The University of Edinburgh

Brief Description

The protocol provides a robust and auditable procedure for determining the performance characteristics of an individual Tidal Energy Converter (TEC) or array of similar TEC devices. This covers the field based measurement program, data analysis methodology and standardised reporting format. This is split into two main sections: first focusing on the methodology for characterising the resource and then secondly the methodology for characterising the device performance.

Preliminary Wave Energy Device Performance Protocol

Document Information

Version 1.3 - March 2007
Commissioned by The Department of Trade and Industry
Prepared by Heriot-Watt University & The University of Edinburgh

Brief Description

The Preliminary Wave Energy Device Performance Protocol is addressed to developers of wave energy generating stations that have or expect to have grants with the DTI under the Wave and Tidal-stream Energy Demonstration Scheme. The Protocol is designed to ensure the capture of data that will subsequently allow the varying power generated by wave energy devices to be considered in the context of the corresponding sea conditions.

Preliminary Wave Energy Device Performance Protocol Supporting Commentary

Document Information

Version 1.3 - March 2007
Commissioned by The Department of Trade and Industry
Prepared by Heriot-Watt University & The University of Edinburgh

Brief Description

The Supporting Commentary provides: additional information and comments in parallel to the Wave Energy Device Performance Protocol. This covers: a guide to wave statistical calculations and the proposed method to describe device performance; a discussion of issues raised at the Protocols Workshop; a discussion of gaps and protocol management issues; a glossary; a list of symbols; and a bibliography. The Supporting Commentary also identifies a number of knowledge gaps where further research is needed.

Review and Analysis of Ocean Energy Systems Development and Supporting Policies

Document Information

A report by AEA Energy & Environment on the behalf of Sustainable Energy Ireland for the IEA’s Implementing Agreement on Ocean Energy Systems 28th June 2006

Brief Description

This report assesses ocean wave and tidal current technologies and in terms of the four aspects below:

  • Current status of ocean energy systems RD&D.
  • Policies and support mechanisms which impact on development.
  • Services and facilities which provide practical support for RD&D.
  • i Common barriers to progress and possible solutions.

Scottish Marine Renewables - Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA)

Document Information

Report prepared for the Scottish Executive by:
Faber Maunsell and METOC Plc, March 2007

Brief Description

The Scottish Executive commissioned this SEA to examine the environmental effects of developing wave and tidal power and to use the results to inform the preparation and delivery of the Scottish Executive’s strategy for the development of marine energy. The results of the SEA will also be used to inform the development of planning guidance for wave and tidal energy developers.

Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) - Marine Guidance Note 275

Document Information

Prepared by MCA and continually updated on website.

Brief Description

This guidance note highlights issues that need to be taken into consideration when assessing the impact on navigational safety from offshore renewable energy developments. This is applicable to United Kingdom internal waters, territorial seas or Renewable Energy Zones (when established) and beyond territorial seas.

IALA Recommendation O-131 - The Marking of Offshore Wave and Tidal Energy Devices

Document Information

Prepared by International Association of Marine Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities
Edition 1, June 2005

Brief Description

This document is for the guidance of stakeholders such as National Administrations, Lighthouse Authorities and energy extraction contractors and developers. It provides guidance to the marking of both wave and tidal devices.

Maritime Coastguard Agency (MCA) Guidance on the Assessment of the Impact of Offshore Wind Farms

Document Information

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) have produced the document, in association with the Department for Transport (DFT), the Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) and BMT Renewables Limited. See website for latest version.

Brief Description

The purpose of this document is to be used as a template by developers in preparing their navigation risk assessments, and for Government Departments to help in the assessment of these. The Methodology is centered on risk controls and the feedback from risk controls into risk assessment. Although this was created for the wind industry, many issues are relevant and it provides useful guidance at this stage for the industry.

Turning the Tide, Tidal Power in the UK

Document Information

Prepared by the Sustainable Development Commission (SDC) Report Released: 30/09/2007

Brief Description

This report examines in-depth the propositon for a Severn Barrage and also the possible application of tidal range, tidal stream and tidal lagoon technologies at other sites around the UK.

Marine climate change impacts Annual Report Card 2007–2008

Document Information

Document MCCIP. (2008). Marine Climate Change Impacts Annual Report Card 2007–2008. (Eds. Baxter JM, Buckley PJ and Wallace CJ), Summary Report, MCCIP, Lowestoft, 8pp.

Brief Description

This report card builds upon the evidence base presented in 2006, highlighting key developments and exploring new subject areas (coastal erosion, coastal habitats and air–sea exchanges of heat and water). It brings together scientific understanding from a wider range of research institutes, providing an even more comprehensive assessment of UK marine climate change impacts and highlighting regional variations where possible.
