Join EMEC as we take part in the Orkney International Science Festival 2021
2 September – 8 September 2021
This year marks the 31st Orkney International Science Festival which will commence at the beginning of September spanning a whole week. The festival will be of hybrid nature and will comprise of over 80 different events and activities, most of them taking place online for greater accessibility.
In the year of coasts and waters in Scotland, the festival will cover a broad spectrum of topic areas and expertise, from Orkney’s historical expeditions and the knowledge and relationships developed, all the way to how the archipelago is currently harnessing the power of the ocean to generate renewable energy and a growing knowledge economy and supply chain today. The OISF spans beyond Orkney’s geography, and covers the spectrum of science matters, from archeological expeditions to energy, ecosystem habitats, even touching on the possibility of extraterrestrial contact! Click on the video below for a sneak peak:
From EMEC, we will be participating in a variety of different events, sessions and virtual engagement activities. These will include hosting the session ‘Flights and Ferries to the Future’ on Thursday, 2 September to discuss innovations in hard-to-decarbonise transport sectors. The session will take place from 19:00-20:00, will include a variety of speakers and a Q&A panel at the end.
We have also contributed to the design and content of other didactic resources which will be available throughout the festival. Stay tuned for further updates on our participation at OISF 2021!
Online events will be streamed through the OISF YouTube Channel, where they will be made available to watch again after the event has taken place. Click on the video below to watch our session:
RESOURCECODE: EWTEC Side Event
As a side event to the European Wave & Tidal Energy Conference, this workshop will take place on Monday 6 September 1700-1830 in a hybrid fashion – online and in-person.
This is a launch event for a new data set and toolbox for the marine energy industry. This new dataset and toolbox contains 27 years of data from the majority of western Europe and is entirely open access. Within this workshop the team will demonstrate the capacity of the toolbox, as well as the value of the datasets.
This event is FREE.
To attend virtually:
- Register via Zoom HERE
To attend in-person:
- Email carly.tait@emec.org.uk to receive your FREE pass

Monitor & RealTide: EWTEC Side Event
As a side event to the European Wave & Tidal Energy Conference, this workshop will take place on Tuesday 7 September 1700-1830 in a hybrid fashion – online and in-person.
Reliability is the key technical challenge to overcome to enable cost reduction and success for the tidal stream energy sector. However, tackling this challenge will require extensive effort using a variety of methods. Since 2018 the partners of the RealTide and MONITOR projects have carried out groundbreaking research into the core problems in tidal turbine reliability, and in this event we will present and discuss our most important findings.
This event is FREE.
To attend virtually:
- Register via Zoom HERE
To attend in-person:

TIGER: EWTEC Side Event
As a side event to the European Wave & Tidal Energy Conference, this webinar will take place on Wednesday 8 September 1700-1830 in a hybrid fashion – online and in-person.
This session will provide insights into key challenges being faced in the tidal stream energy sector, and the role of academia and industry in overcoming them.
Agenda:
- Welcome & TIGER overview
- Presentation of collaborative opportunities
- Q&A and Discussion
This event is FREE to attend and EWTEC registration is not required, however you do need to register to attend the event here or to attend in person email carly.tait@emec.org.uk

Environmental data transfer: the role of test centres
Join EMEC for the latest ETIP Ocean webinar: ‘Environmental data transfer: the role of test centres’ | Thursday 16 September at 10am BST
Caitlin’s presentation will explore good practice in sharing and disseminating data as well look at the barriers of data sharing. She’ll also talk about the drivers for academic research vs developer-led monitoring.
This Webinar is now available to watch for free here:
Seanergy 2021
Excited to be getting back into the conference circuit and meeting people face-to-face again. This week we’re participating in the 2021 Seanergy Conference, taking place online and in-person in Nantes, France | 21 – 24 September.
James Walker, Hydrogen Development Manager at EMEC, is speaking alongside Lorna Slater MSP, Scottish Government Minister for Green Skills, Circular Economy and Biodiversity, in a panel looking at the role for hydrogen in the development of offshore renewables. James will share findings and recommendations from our recent report on supporting collaborative innovation activity between floating wind and hydrogen supply chains in Scotland and France.
Join James at the event, or view his talk online by registering here: https://www.seanergy-forum.com/en/seanergyforum/Register
You’ll also find James at the Networking cocktail “Interreg synergy for marine renewables” side event on 23 Sept. The event is being hosted by a coalition of Interreg projects addressing the various stages of innovation in developing marine renewable energy from technical and business services in MEA, to testing and demonstration opportunities in BLUE-GIFT, Ocean DEMO and AFLOWT.

The Floating Tidal Energy Commercialisation (FloTEC) project, led by Orbital Marine Power, aimed to demonstrate how floating tidal systems can provide low-cost, high-value energy to the European grid mix. The project built on Orbital’s existing floating tidal technology to develop and demonstrate the world’s most powerful tidal stream turbine – the O2. The aim was to demonstrate an advanced, full-scale device in real conditions with high levels of reliability and survivability, while developing a greater understanding of factors such as installation, operation and decommissioning costs.
Thanks to FloTEC, the Orbital O2 2 MW tidal energy turbine was deployed at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney in 2021 and is scheduled to operate at EMEC for the next 15 years.
The FloTEC project however has come to an end, and the project team would like to provide insight into the work undertaken during the project. The O2 features a number of innovations, including up to 50 percent greater energy capture through enlarged rotors with a lower rated speed, full onsite access to all turbine systems through an optimised platform configuration, high performance blades and compatibility with local supply chain and infrastructure.
