ICOE Programme | Our highlights…
Day 1 | Operating in the cruel sea: Learning and planning (0920 – 1035)
Our CEFOW project partners, Jason Schofield (Green Marine) and Irina Temiz (Uppsala University), will discuss their experiences of operations and maintenance at EMEC’s Billia Croo wave test site.
Day 1 | Operating in the cruel sea: Installing, Inspecting & Maintaining (1100 – 1230)
Andrew Scott (Scotrenewables), will discuss low cost floating tidal energy, looking at the success of the SR1-2000 that is currently testing at EMEC’s Fall of Warness test site, and looking forward to the next iteration of the device, being developed under FloTEC.
Day 1 | Development of a Streamlined Consenting Process at the European Marine Energy Centre (1315 – 1345)
Caitlin Long (EMEC’s Environment & Consents Specialist) is presenting a poster within the poster presentation session on how EMEC can aid the development of a streamlined consenting process.
Day 1 | Risk Reduction: Towards more reliability (1705 – 1830)
Johannes Hüffmeier (RISE) discussing the RiaSoR 2 (Reliability in a Sea of Risk) project, and Gregory Pinon (Le Havre University) discussing the MONITOR project.
Day 2 | Solutions for Remote Areas (1330 – 1500)
Neil Kermode (EMEC’s Managing Director) is presenting on ‘Joining the dots – from tidal energy to a hydrogen economy’ to demonstrate how EMEC are pioneering the transition from tidal energy to hydrogen.
Day 2 | Technologies getting wet, corroded and colonized (1330 – 1500)
Andrew Want (Research Associate, Heriot-Watt University) is presenting on ‘Bio-FREE in international collaboration to assess the impacts of biofouling on the marine renewable energy industry’ to discuss what the Bio-FREE project aims to achieve and progress to date.
Day 2 | Building the Blocks of Invisibility – Funding Leverages & Opportunities (1510 – 1625)
Nicolas Wallet (EMEC’s FORESEA Programme Manager) will discuss the advancements FORESEA funding has made within the wave & tidal energy industry in his presentation – ‘FORESEA and the funding jigsaw for technology development’.
Day 2 | Building the blocks of investability: Rising the level of confidence (1645 – 1800)
Our project partner, Peter Scheijgrond (Dutch Marine Energy Centre), will speak about advancing IEC standardisation and certification for tidal energy converters as part of the MET-CERTIFIED project.
Day 2 | Technologies getting wet: wave (1645 – 1800)
Patrik Moller (CorPower) will provide an update on their activities testing at EMEC’s scale wave test site in Scapa Flow.
Day 3 | Updates for test sites (1030 – 1145)
Oliver Wragg (EMEC’s Commercial Director) is chairing this session, which will provide updates from test sites from around the globe including PMEC (USA), SEENEOH (France), BiMEP (Spain), and HINMREC (USA – Hawaii).

About ICOE 2018
Organised in 2018 by BlueSign in partnership with the Normandy region, Manche Department, Le Cotentin Communauté d’Agglomération and Cherbourg-en-Cotentin, ICOE will be held in Cherbourg, Normandy, from June 12th to 14th in La Cité de la Mer.
Held every two years since 2006, ICOE aims at gathering stakeholders from the sector of ocean energies (tidal, wave, salinity gradient, ocean thermal energies) and sharing the most recent experiences on research, technology transfer efforts and technological demonstration.
The purpose of the event is to accelerate development by stimulating collaboration between companies, researchers and development centres. It also targets engagement of operators with experience in related marine and power industry sectors.
In 2018, ICOE will join forces with Seanergy – the largest event on Marine Renewable Energy (MRE) in Europe – which brought together in 2017, 3,500 experts and professionals, 220 exhibitors and helped organizing more than 800 business meetings.
The complementarity of these two events aims to combine scientific content and business opportunities in order to:
•Disseminate recent technical experiences and demonstration from ocean energy research
•Generate business for companies of the ocean energy sector
•Promote the economic and societal dimension of ocean energy
•Attract young people to work in the ocean energy field

The 4th Asian Wave and Tidal Energy Conference (AWTEC) will be held in Taipei, Taiwan from 9-13 September 2018.
About AWTEC:
The aim of the conference is to promote scientific advancement, technological progress, information exchange, and cooperation among engineers and researchers in ocean energy in an interdisciplinary spectrum. Relevant scientists, researchers and engineers are welcome to take advantage of this opportunity to submit and present their research work and/or industrial applications and interact with other experts in this challenging field.
Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association 10th Annual Conference: Delivering Scotland’s Energy and Climate Targets

The 10th Scottish Hydrogen & Fuel Cell Conference annual conference takes place on Wednesday 26 September 2018 in Dundee, one of Scotland’s most vibrant cities. This one day conference at the Apex Hotel will showcase hydrogen and fuel cell applications and their deployment as efficient and integrated low emission energy systems.
SHFCA members and delegates will hear expert speakers during sessions on international trade and partnerships, and how hydrogen and fuel cells can be the smarter choice in Heat, Power, and Transport for low carbon deployments. The underpinning themes will be use of high efficiency fuel cells for clean power and hydrogen as the clean energy vector, and how these can both support the delivery of Scotland’s new Energy Strategy and Climate Plan.
This one day SHFCA 10th annual conference will be preceded on the evening of Tuesday 25 September by a civic reception, hosted by the City of Dundee. This reception and our pre-conference dinner will both take place at Discovery Point in Dundee.

Pathway to Commercialisation | Lunch & Workshop
EMEC is on a mission to create a thriving marine energy industry.
We know that developing a marine energy technology is not easy. It’s a tough path to tread as a technology developer: to balance technical developments whilst also working on a clear commercialisation strategy to attract investment.
To put early stage developers and their technologies in the best possible position to be a leader in a globally thriving marine energy industry, EMEC is hosting a lunch and workshop on the ’Pathway to Commercialisation’ which will provide a clear overview of how we support marine energy technology developers on their pathway to and through EMEC, providing an overview of our facilities, services, expertise and lessons learnt following 15 years of operating the world’s leading test facility.
This event has been designed to fit around the Ocean Energy Europe conference in Edinburgh (30-31 October 2018).
The agenda will include:
- EMEC test site, infrastructure and kit
- Recommended testing prior to offshore deployment
- Recommended engineering and planning prior to offshore deployment
- Operations and maintenance
- Consenting and Environmental monitoring
- Performance assessment and technical verification

Andrew Scott (Orbital Marine Power) will share their successes, lessons learnt and strategic decisions from SR2000 testing programme which was deployed at EMEC’s Fall of Warness test site over the last year.
Day 1 | Down to earth: Getting your foundations right (1600 – 1730)
Hans van Breugel (Tocardo) will discuss Tocardo’s foundation choice and how this will ensure a sturdy and reliable anchor whilst minimising costs.
Day 1 | Export Markets: Writing a global success story (1600 – 1730)
Heikki Paakkinen (Wello) will provide an update on the markets they are targeting and the challenges of entering these for industrial roll-out.
Day 2 | Finance: New routes through the valley of death (1100 – 1230)
Paul Wheelhouse, Scottish Minister for Energy, Connectivity and the Islands, will give a keynote speech between 1215 – 1230.
