The Interreg NWE’s Ocean DEMO project hosted an online user workshop following the opening of its 3rd call for applications. This online event will delve in and explain the application system in more detail for any ocean energy technology developers who are interested in accessing free, real sea testing facilites. It will also cover the available support packages within Ocean DEMO and highlight common themes and challenges that technology developers need to address during their testing period. Hear from technology developers, Orbital Marine Power and SeaQurrent, on their experiences of applying for Ocean DEMO support and learn a little more about their technologies.

You are invited to join the first in a series of six supply chain seminar events as part of the TIGER project, a €45m project funded by Interreg France (Channel) England via the Zoom meeting platform. The events are hosted by EMEC and facilitated by ORE Catapult.
The first event, supported by the Ocean Power Innovation Network, will focus on subsea cables & connectors, aiming to integrate cross-sector supply chain capability and innovation into the development of world leading tidal energy projects.

Emerging themes for future TIGER supply chain events to keep an eye out for are:

The 16th annual Smart Energy conference will take place via video-conferencing on 18 – 20 August 2020. This conference will bring together experts, innovators & disruptors from across the globe to network and exchange ideas with energy leaders, commercial consumers, academics and policy makers from the smart, clean & renewable sectors.

EMEC’s Managing Director Neil Kermode will be presenting on Thursday 20 August, during a session on tidal energy. This session will explore recent developments and the future milestones associated with international tidal projects including the European Marine Energy Centre and Nova Scotia’s Bay of Fundy.

Scottish Renewables Annual Conference is taking place online on 1 – 3 September 2020. This event is the place where all the players who will make net zero happen in Scotland convene.

Day 3 | 3 September 2020 | 1000 – 1115 | Plenary 6 – Systems transformation: accelerating the rate of change
How can we plan and manage our grid resource to meet the demands of the UK market? How do we understand and keep pace with the changes that are happening around us and make sure that we use all the new options and tools available to us to optimise our energy networks?
In this session, EMEC’s Managing Director, Neil Kermode, will present on the ReFLEX Orkney project, a £28.5 million Innovate UK project, which aims to decarbonise Orkney’s energy system, increase the use of local renewable generation and provide a competitive local renewable electricity tariff.

POWER FROM COASTS AND WATERS

ORKNEY’S ENERGY REVOLUTION: HYDROGEN & ENERGY SYSTEMS

Orkney is pioneering the production and use of green hydrogen, and is the location of a first-of-its-kind integrated energy system trial. This evening’s speakers bring the latest news of pioneering projects – generating hydrogen from tidal energy, decarbonising lifeline island services (ferries and aviation) and key industries (distilling), and integrating the energy system across Orkney’s islands. Neil Kermode, Richard Ainsworth and James Ferguson of EMEC are joined by Gareth Davies of Aquatera.
The Shipping & the Blue Economy Virtual Forum will take place on the 23 – 24 September 2020. Join this online forum and take full advantage of this unique platform to explore the importance of the oceans and the environmental, social, and economic benefits of a sustainable blue economy for the shipping sector.

We’re joining Action Renewables Energy Association for this online event looking at the challenges and opportunities of marine energy in Northern Ireland. Showcasing both Northern Irish and Scottish marine energy sectors, the online event will take a look at the potential of ongoing projects in Strangford Lough and in the Orkney Islands, discussing how the challenges surrounding marine spatial governance, biodiversity protection, recreation, fishing and boating are limiting the potential of fully harnessing marine energy for a sustainable energy future.

As External Relationship Manager, this breadth of experience directly feeds her role which includes new business development and political lobbying, as EMEC has become a global focal point for the emerging marine renewables industry.

Sam joined CASE, an industry led, sustainable energy r&d centre, funded by Invest NI in November 2011, following a 17-year career in consultancy. She calls upon broad ranging experience of leading energy, sustainability and resource efficiency projects across a number of industry sectors, from local to pan-European projects. She currently sits on the Ireland wide Marine Renewable Industry Association (MRIA) Council.
Dr Carwyn Frost, Lecturer in Civil Engineering, Queen’s University Belfast.

Dr Carwyn Frost is an Early Career Researcher (ECR) and lecturer in Civil Engineering at Queen’s University Belfast. Dr Frost is experienced in Computational Fluid Dynamic (CFD) simulations and experimental validation in the laboratory and field for Ocean Renewable Energy (ORE) technology. Dr Frost aims to support research and enterprise ni the ORE community, facilitating field scale testing and measurement campaigns suitable for validation and appropriate scaling of technologies to support the ORE sector in fulfilling its potential.
Dr Karen Mooney, Research Fellow in Biological Sciences, Queen’s University Belfast.
Dr Karen Mooney is a Research Fellow in Biological Sciences in Queen’s University Belfast. She currently manages the Queen’s University Belfast seaweed cultivation facility (largest in the UK). Her primary research interest is in algal cultivation and toxins. Dr Mooney is researching how to sustainably maximise the cultivation potential of kelp, either alone or in conjunction with other aquaculture or renewable energy technologies. She is also involved with policy awareness and community engagement processes linked to coastal and offshore development.
This event will explain how the Hydrogen Territories Platform (HTP) can inform and help you to identify local replication opportunities for the development, deployment, and exploitation of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies for integrated local energy systems.

The new Hydrogen Territories Platform, developed within the BIG HIT project, will support replication of the local energy systems model. The HTP will provide information and modelling tools to support the wider development and replication of this model to other islands and isolated territories. This HTP will provide interested parties information and best practices relating to the deployment methodology, operation and logistics for the supply and distribution of green hydrogen in islands and isolated territories.
The presentations will be followed by a questions & answer session, which will also explain how you can join the HTP, build your networks, and start to make use of the replication tools including your own schematic map for a Hydrogen Territory or Hydrogen Valley.
