The IDCORE Programme‘s annual symposium is going online this year, over two days (26 May & 2 June 2020) to showcase the cutting-edge research being undertaken to progress offshore renewable energy.
James Ferguson, EMEC’s Hydrogen Research Engineer is studying towards an EngD through IDCORE, and will be speaking during part 1 on Tuesday 26th May on ‘supplying hydrogen for Orkney’s ferries’.

The Ocean Power Innovation Network (OPIN) project are hosting a webinar on the progress tidal energy is making within Europe.
This webinar aims to bring OPIN members and companies working in the ocean energy and supply chain together to learn about the work which is being undertaken in the tidal energy space. As well as identify some key areas which can be taken forward by Collaborative Innovation Groups, with support through the OPIN programme, to develop into new processes, products or projects

The 7th International Conference on ICT for Sustainability (ICT4S 2020) is being held virtually from 21 – 27 June 2020.
The ICT4S conferences bring together leading researchers in Information and Communications Technology (ICT) for Sustainability with government and industry representatives, including decision-makers with an interest in using ICT for sustainability, researchers focusing on ICT effects on sustainability and developers of sustainable ICT systems or applications. Equally important to the conference is the inclusion of the views, processes and constraints that the various groups within the society face when pursuing sustainability through ICT, such as, community engagement for community energy group formation, and activism.
The conferences feature an innovative format for presenting new research, focusing on participation and conversation rather than passive listening.
Skills shortage for transition to smart local energy systems
Wednesday 24 June | 13.30 – 15.30 (GMT+1)
In order to realise successful transition to clean, smart local energy systems we need to ensure that the right skills and training are provided to the current/future energy system workers. This panel will discuss what lessons could we learn from current or recent transition projects, how would one go about identifying which skills will be required in the medium-term future, and what kind of training should be provided, by whom and to whom to support such skills development, as well as what roles do various energy systems stakeholders have in such a transition and training provision?
EMEC’s Neil Kermode, Managing Director, will be a panelist during this session, talking about the ReFLEX Orkney (Responsive Flexibility) project which creating a ‘smart energy island’ by developing a ground-breaking ‘virtual energy system’ in Orkney, This aims to monitor generation, grid constraint and energy demand and then use smart control of energy technologies to manage and improve the supply-demand balance.

The Interreg NWE’s Ocean DEMO project hosted an online user workshop following the opening of its 3rd call for applications. This online event will delve in and explain the application system in more detail for any ocean energy technology developers who are interested in accessing free, real sea testing facilites. It will also cover the available support packages within Ocean DEMO and highlight common themes and challenges that technology developers need to address during their testing period. Hear from technology developers, Orbital Marine Power and SeaQurrent, on their experiences of applying for Ocean DEMO support and learn a little more about their technologies.
