EMEC will be involved in the following aspects of this year’s Orkney International Science Festival:
Hydrogen for Orkney
13 September 2017, 11:30am – 12:30pm
A new European project to be launched later this month will bring ten hydrogen-powered vans to Orkney. The aim is to tackle grid constraints by turning surplus electricity into hydrogen for local transport, as Nigel Holmes of the Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association and Jon Clipsham of EMEC explains, with the help of local participants.
The tides of Ushant
13 September 2017, 2:00pm – 3:00pm
The island of Ushant off the coast of Brittany now generates much of its own electricity from the fast tides. Denis Bredin sets the scene with pictures of the island and its beaches and lighthouses. Speakers from SABELLA and EDF describe the tidal power scheme.
This session will be chaired by EMEC’s Managing Director, Neil Kermode.

The pioneering hydrogen project - Surf ‘n’ Turf – will be officially launched on 27 September 2017, in Kirkwall, Orkney. The event is being organised by Community Energy Scotland.

The MET- CERTIFIED project partners would like to invite you to attend a free workshop held in Nantes, France on Tuesday 24 October.
The workshop is designed to actively involve all stakeholders around certification, from banks and insurers to consenting authorities, technology developers, test facilities and certification bodies. During the workshop, experts will explain the system that is under development under the umbrella of the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). Stakeholders are invited to share their expectations and needs from the system.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND?
The MET-CERTIFIED workshop has been established to gather feedback from the industry on what is required to reduce the risks of marine energy projects through certification. Therefore, the workshop encourages the participation of marine energy technology developers, supply chain companies, classification agencies, test laboratories, project developers, financiers and insurers. However, the workshop is open to all interested parties to attend.
EMEC’s Performance Test Engineer, Anna Southall, will be attending.

This workshop is free to attend, but registration is essential.
The workshop is organised as a side event of the Ocean Energy Europe Conference and Exhibition, in Nantes, France on 25 and 26 October, 2017. Multi-MW offshore farms run by EU utilities model is one way to market. Yet ocean energy technologies are increasingly finding routes to market outside of this model. Can markets such as islands, hydrogen generation or storage/off-grid solutions offer higher returns today? Are PPAs with data centres, distilleries, O&G platforms, aquaculture a valid business model to bridge the gap to commercialisation?

The annual Atlantic Stakeholder Platform Conference (ASPC) offers a great transnational publicity opportunity to deliver the Atlantic Action Plan (AAP) key messages and further promote awareness of its achievements. The annual conference is the central hub for stakeholders of the Atlantic Strategy to meet, seek ways of cooperation, share information and identify funding opportunities and partnerships for their projects.

A presentation will be given on energy storage linked with tidal power, reviewing how energy storage can be used to optimize electricity production from tidal power; assess the opportunities for going off grid or working in remote locations; and evaluate the latest feasibility studies and time simulations to develop commercial models linked with tidal energy
